SM’s Megan Owens places fourth, fifth in state meet

Smoky Mountain’s Megan Owens finished fourth and fifth in her individual events at Saturday’s State 2-A Swim Meet in Raleigh.

Owens placed fourth in the 100 freestyle with a time of 56.42. She was fifth in the 50 free in 25.9. She was just .7 seconds out of fourth place in the 50.

Competing as an individual for the Mustang men was Mark Miller. He beat his entry times by three seconds in the 100 butterfly and one second in the 100 backstroke.

Whitfield Anderson, Grayson Cooper, Anthony McDowell and Miller represented SM in the men’s 200 medley and 200 free relays. Josh Young was an alternate.

The Lady Mustangs had three relay teams. The 200 medley squad included Katie Hayes, Kaitlyn Kluge, Owens and Annelise Davis. The 200 free relay team was made up of Davis, Hayes, Alex Kevlin and Owens. The 400 free team included Victoria Palmer, Rachel Graning, Kevlin and Kluge. Natalie Woodard was a relay alternate.

Cardinal Gibbons, a private school from Raleigh just admitted to the N.C. High School Athletic Association this year, easily won the women’s team title while shattering state and pool records in most events.

The Lady Mustangs were 20th with 29 points thanks to Owens’ showing.

East Lincoln won the men’s title with Cardinal Gibbons second. The SM men did not score.

Coaches Bill Bowers and Peter Hughes expressed pride in the accomplishments of the swim teams and said they are looking forward to building the squads next year.
