Possession of marijuana, meth leads to man’s arrest

By Lynn Hotaling

020906mathesonA Jan. 29 traffic stop near East LaPorte led to the arrest of a Sylva man on drug-related charges.

Victor Ralph Matheson, 43, was caught with 4.6 grams of marijuana and 1 gram of methamphetamine, according to Capt. Steve Lillard of the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputy Rollie James initially stopped Matheson’s truck for an equipment violation, Lillard said. Upon questioning Matheson and a passenger, Daniel Lucas Jones, 22, who had an outstanding warrarnt for failure to appear in court, James became suspicious and requested permission to search the vehicle, Lillard said.

Permission was granted, and Deputy Scotty Holder assisted with the search, which uncovered the controlled substances, Lillard said.

Matheson, who remained in jail as of Monday in lieu of a $2,500 bond, faces three drug-related charges: possession of meth; possession of marijuana; and possession of drug paraphernalia. He also received a traffic citation for improper equipment, Lillard said.

Jones was arrested on the outstanding warrant, Lillard said.
