Obituary Information

The Sylva Herald prints obituaries free of charge as a service to its readers.

When possible, obituaries should be submitted to The Herald from the funeral home in charge of arrangements. Information received will be printed in our standard obituary format. As is the case with all information submitted to The Herald, we reserve the right to edit obituary information to fit our standard format.

We publish names of the deceased's children; we also include the number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren. We do not include in-laws, cousins, nieces and nephews or special friends.

Included in a brief history of the deceased is items such as their employment, professional, civic, community and religious affiliations. We omit personal tributes.

To publish a more detailed obituary or one in another format, the announcement can run as a paid advertisement.

Terry Conard

James “Terry” Conard, 36, of Old Cat Creek Road, Franklin, died Tuesday, Jan. 31, 2006, at a local hospital.

Services were held at 2 p.m. Friday, Feb. 3, at Emmanuel Baptist Church with the Revs. Paul Hill and Howard Southard officiating. Burial was in Windy Gap Baptist Church Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Joel Springer, Tex Davis, Joe DiAngelo, Bill Crimes, Mark Hayes and Bob Parker.

Honorary pallbearers were his cousins.

He was a native of Macon County and a carpet installer. He was a 1989 graduate of Franklin High School and enjoyed bowling, having bowled a perfect game. He enjoyed digging ginseng and was an avid fan of the University of North Carolina Tar Heels. He was a former member of Burningtown-Iotla Fire Department and a member of Emmanuel Baptist Church. He was a son of James Richard and Peggy King Conard of Franklin.

Surviving in addition to his parents are his wife, Kari Huskey Conard; one daughter, Andrea Nichole Conard of the home; two sons, James Brandon Conard and Zachary Levi Conard, both of the home; one stepson, Joshua Kyle Blanton, of the home; maternal grandmother, Martha King of Franklin; paternal grandmother, Alice Overman of Waynesville; and two brothers, Michael Wayne Conard and Curtis Lee Conard, both of Franklin.

Memorials may be made to the family.

Betty Crowe

Betty Louise “Mit” Crowe, 54, of Sylva, formerly of Cherokee’s Yellowhill community, died unexpectedly Tuesday, Jan. 31, in an Asheville hospital.

Services were held at 2 p.m. Friday, Feb. 3, at Acquoni Baptist Church with Rev. James “Bo” Parris and Ray Kinsland officiating. Burial was in Yellowhill Cemetery.

She enjoyed doing crafts and taking care of children. She was a daughter of the late Jack Davis and Roxie Rattler Davis.

She was also preceded in death by two brothers, Johnny “Hoppy” Davis Sr. and Mark “Pete” Davis.

Surviving are one son, Billy Jack Crowe of Cherokee; one daughter, Kimberly Dawn Crowe of Sylva; three brothers, Glenn “Dude” Davis Sr. and William Davis Sr., both of Cherokee, and Carl Robert Davis of Knoxville, Tenn.; two sisters, Vera Lynn Rickman of Cherokee and Jacqueline Davis; and five grandchildren.

Clarence Pressley

020906clarencepressleyClarence Ervin Pressley, 63, of Forest Hills, died Friday, Feb. 3, 2006, at Mountain Trace Nursing Center, after a period of declining health brought on by Parkinson’s Disease.

Services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 5, at East Sylva Baptist Church with Charles McConnell and the Revs. Tommy James, Roger Stewman, Charles Dean, Ad Hooper and Charles Stevens officiating. Burial was in Hooper-Speedwell Cemetery.

He was born and raised in the Speedwell community and graduated from Cullowhee High School in 1961. He graduated from Winston-Salem Barber School in 1963, and owned and operated Pressley Barber and Style Shop on the campus of Western Carolina University until 2004, when he retired because of poor health. He belonged to the WNC Referee Association for many years and was an ALCC field judge. He was a rabbit hunter, raised beagles and was a field judge for the American Kennel Club. He was commonly known as “The Mayor of Cullowhee.”

He served on the Cullowhee Fire Department for 33 years and held several offices. He was also active with the Smoky Mountain High School athletic program and was public address announcer for football and basketball games. He coached Little League for many years and sponsored a team. He was active with WCU athletics and was in charge of the chain gang. He was a member of East Sylva Baptist Church, where he taught Sunday school, was an RA director, member of the choir and worked with the youth. He was a son of Cling Pressley of Cullowhee and the late Mary Pressley.

Surviving in addition to his father are his wife of 39 years, Betty Williams Pressley; one son, Michael Pressley of Sylva; two brothers, Ray Pressley of Cullowhee and Phil Pressley of Candler; and two grandchildren.

Cecil Queen

The Rev. Cecil C. Queen, 79, of Canada Road, Tuckasegee, died Monday, Feb. 6, 2006, at Harris Regional Hospital after a period of declining health.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. today (Thursday, Feb. 9) in the chapel of Melton-Riddle Funeral Home with the Revs. Keith Queen, Eddie Stillwell, John Bates, Sherrill Ammons and Tommy Holden officiating. The family was scheduled to receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 8, at the funeral home. Burial will be in Queen Family Cemetery.

A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, he was a retired self-employed logger. He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served in World War II. He was a son of the late Mance and Lular Brown Queen.

He was also preceded in death by two daughters, Audrey Queen and Geneva Moore; two sons, Kenny and Tony C. Queen; two sisters, Annie Queen and Mattie Broom; and three brothers, Virgle, Spurgeon and Lawrence “Cot” Queen.

Surviving are his wife of 45 years, Geraldine Painter Queen; five daughters, Brenda Morgan of Rosman, Sylvia McCall of Etowah, Gaynelle Owen of Lake Toxaway, Marvellia Murphy of Tuckasegee and Tina Ashe of Sylva; five sons, the Rev. Keith Queen of Rosman, Terry Queen of Penrose, Russell Queen of Cullowhee, Perry Queen of the home and Happy Queen of Waynesville; three sisters, Oma Smith of Rosman, Nelia Robinson of Quebec, and Minnie Conner of Tuckasegee; one brother, Doyle Queen of Balsam Grove; 23 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

Genoa Stephens

Genoa Stephens, 70, of Tobacco Road, Cullowhee, died Tuesday, Feb. 7, 2006, at Harris Regional Hospital.

James Tolley

James “Junior” Tolley, 70, of Tsali Manor, Cherokee, died Tuesday, Jan. 31, 2006, at Tsali Care Center.

Services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 4, at Long Branch Baptist Church with David Tolley and the Revs. Charles Carnes and Eddie Stillwell officiating. Burial was in Stillwell Cemetery.

A native of Seneca, S.C., he had lived in Jackson County all of his life. He worked 30 years for the town of Sylva in the Sanitation Department. He enjoyed fishing, gardening and listening to gospel music. He was a member of the Jackson County Rescue Squad. He was a son of the late Albert and Dora Callahan Tolley.

Surviving are his wife of 46 years, Rowena Robinson Tolley; one daughter, Mary Ann Tolley of Cherokee; three sons, Roy Tolley and Danny Tolley, both of Sylva, and David Tolley of Tampa, Fla.; three sisters, Gladys Gregory of Rock Hill, S.C., Nadene Robinson of Franklin and Bobbie Watson of Gastonia; one brother, Edward Tolley of Rock Hill; 14 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Melton-Riddle Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.



Clinton Carl

Clinton Edward Carl, 80, of Tuckasegee’s Trout Creek community, died Sunday, Jan. 29, 2006, at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Asheville.

Services will be held at noon, Friday, Feb. 10, at the Western North Carolina State Veterans Cemetery in Black Mountain.

A native of Sutton, Neb., he was a U.S. Army veteran, having served in World War II. He worked in Broward County, Fla., as an educator, coach and athletic director. He built his home in Trout Creek in 1964 and retired to the community in 1992. He enjoyed wood working and jewelry making in his home shop, and gardening. He was a son of the late John Clinton and Frances Maude Carl.

He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Don Carl and Frank Carl; and two sisters, Mary Miller and Anne George.

Surviving are his wife of 60 years, Edna Mae Snyder Carl; one sister, Barbara Vokoun of Hallam, Neb.; one son, Rodney Carl of the home; three daughters, Diane Carl of Hillsboro, Ore., Debra Mathis of Marble and Michelle Bernard of Baton Rouge, La.; six grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.



Lillie Collins

Lillie Coker Collins, 96, of Racking Cove Road, Sylva, died Tuesday, Feb. 7, 2006, at Harris Regional Hospital after a brief illness.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. today (Thursday, Feb. 9) at Buff Creek Baptist Church, of which she was a member, with the Revs. Gerald Morris and Wayne Sorrells officiating. The family will receive friends for one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will be in Addie Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Steven Fitzgerald, Tony Tinsley, Jack Lee, Steven Tinsley, Timmy Tinsley and Mike Merrell.

A native of Greenville, S.C., she had lived in Jackson County for the last 40 years. She had worked in the cafeteria at Western Carolina University, and enjoyed working crossword puzzles and singing. She was a daughter of the late William and Alice Burns Coker.

She was also preceded in death by her husband, the Rev. Clyde W. Collins, who died in 1998; one son, Bill Collins; one daughter, Carolyn Tinsley; one brother, Denten Coker; and one twin sister, Millie Taber.

Surviving are two daughters, Norma Higgins of Ocala, Fla., and Patricia Ann Merrell of Horse Shoe; 12 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Addie Cemetery Fund, 1274 Mineral Springs Dr., Sylva, NC 28779.

Howard Reagan

T. Howard Reagan, 83, of Whittier, died Wednesday Feb. 1, 2006, at Tsali Care Center.

Services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 4, in the chapel of Crisp Funeral Home with the Revs. Steve Phillipi and Johnny Norris officiating. Burial was in Thomas Cemetery.

He was a native and lifelong resident of Jackson County. He worked at the Ford dealership in Sylva for many years, and retired from the Roads Department with the Bureau of Indian Affairs. He was a member of Olivet United Methodist Church.

He was preceded in death by one son, Robert; two brothers, Dexter Reagan and Luther Reagan; and one sister, Josephine Allison.

Surviving are his wife of 65 years, Hazel Freeman Reagan; two sons, Tom Reagan of Ooltewah, Tenn., and Gerald Reagan of Whittier; one daughter, Linda Reagan of Whittier; two sisters, Pauline Rowley and Ruby Clement; five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.



Lorise Long

Lorise Mathis Long, 90, of Sylva, died Sunday, Feb. 5, 2006, at a local nursing home following a brief period of declining health.

Graveside services were held at 3 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 7, in Old Field Cemetery with the Rev. David Harris officiating.

She enjoyed playing bingo, going to the casino, and doing her laundry to hang on the line. She was a daughter of the late Peter and Annie Mathis.

She was also preceded in death by her husband, Eugene Douglas Long; three sons, Lewis Homer Lanning, Jimmy Lanning and Bobby Young; and 12 brothers and sisters.

Surviving are one son, Larry Young of Sylva; four daughters, Pauline Smathers, Rachel Oliver and Hilda McGoldrick, all of Sylva, and Phyllis Kisser of Maryland; 23 grandchildren; and 38 great-grandchildren.

Edith Blanton

Edith Hensley Blanton, 93, of Sylva, died Tuesday, Jan. 31, 2006, at Skyland Care Center after a period of declining health.

Services were held at 2 p.m. Friday, Feb. 3, in the chapel of Melton-Riddle Funeral Home with the Revs. Mike Moore and Mike Farmer officiating. Burial was in New Hope Baptist Church Cemetery.

Pallbearers were her grandsons.

She was a native and lifelong resident of Jackson County. She was a daughter of the late Charlie W. and Artie E. McMahan Hensley.

She was also preceded in death by her husband, Vester Guy Blanton, who died in 1975; and five sisters, Ruth Warren, Marie Vance, Zola Dills, Lucille Hensley and Lillian Barrett.

Surviving are one daughter, Wanda Blanton Phillips of Stevenson, Ala.; three sons, Vester Guy Blanton Jr. of Raleigh, Ray M. Blanton of Sylva and Charles Kenneth Blanton of Weaverville; 11 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Harry Babb

020906harrybabbHarry Chase Babb, 75, of Cashiers, died Saturday, Feb. 4, 2006, after a lengthy illness.

Services will be held at 7 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 11, in the chapel of Macon Funeral Home with the Revs. Johnny Norris and Everett Wilson officiating. The family will receive friends for one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

He was born March 6, 1930, in Knoxville, Tenn., and was a U.S. Air Force veteran. He was an instructor in analog/digital computers and Link trainers at Chanute Air Force Base in Illinois from 1954 to 1958. After leaving the Air Force he was employed by Metropolitan Life Insurance Co. and was a recipient of the Million Dollar Round Table in his first year with MET. He was named manager of the Miami Shores district and earned many other sales awards such as the President’s Club/Million Dollar Round Table throughout his career with MET through 1969.

In 1968 he moved to Cashiers, and was an agent for N.C. Farm Bureau briefly before serving as branch manager of the new Wachovia Bank in Cashiers. In 1973 he started his own independent insurance agency in Cashiers. In 1998 he was awarded a 25-year service award by Waddell-Sluder and Adams, the general agency of Zurich U.S. Insurance Group. He was instrumental in the formation of the Cashiers annual Christmas parade and Cashiers Area Chamber of Commerce, which he served as first president of in 1982. He served as the PTO president at Blue Ridge School, was a fund-raiser for Highlands-Cashiers Hospital and was active in community affairs. In 2002 he sold the agency to his children and retired. He was a son of the late Charles Homer Babb Sr. and Mary Leta Blackburn Babb.

He was also preceded in death by two sons, Aubrey Alan Babb and Robert Lynn Babb; and one brother, Charles H. Babb.

Surviving are his wife of 51 years, Jorita Rosalie Porter Babb; one son, Michael D. Babb; two daughters, Deborah B. Hicks and Carla B. Tucker, both of Cashiers; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Glenville-Cashiers Rescue Squad, the Cashiers-Glenville Volunteer Fire Department or Hospice.

Paul Buff

Paul Kermitt Buff Sr., 80, of Sylva, died Monday, Feb. 6, 2006, at Solace Hospice Center in Asheville following a period of declining health.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Feb. 10, at Whittier United Methodist Church with the Rev. David Baxter officiating.

He was born Oct. 19, 1925, in Hickory, and attended Hickory High School, where he played baseball and football. At the beginning of World War II, he enlisted in the Army Specialized Training Program. He was later sent to Camp McCain, Miss., and the 94th Infantry Division Rifle Company, a member of C Company of the 302 Infantry Regiment. He fought in St. Nayaire and Loriet, France, and in the Battle of the Bulge. He spent several months in an English hospital and was on his way back to combat on “Victory in Europe Day.” He was then assigned to the Paris-American Post Office until he returned home and was honorably discharged. He was chosen to lay a wreath at the monument “Young Men Rising From the Sea” in Collville-sur-Mer on June 6, 2002, for his service in that region.

After service, he graduated from Lenoir-Rhyne College and worked for 38 years with MDI in Hickory until his retirement. He enjoyed reading, working crossword puzzles, gardening and playing golf. He was a former member of Lake Hickory Country Club, Conley’s Creek Country Club and Jackson County Golf Club. He was a member of American Legion Post 104 and a founding member of the Hickory Jaycees. He was a former member of Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church, where he served as president of the congregation and on numerous committees. He was a member of Whittier United Methodist Church, where he served on the church council. He moved to Whittier in 1974 and lived with his wife in her ancestral home, Hampton Place, that was built in 1880 by her maternal grandfather, Ezekiel Howard Hampton, a Civil War veteran. He was a son of the late Jason Eubert and Helen Gordon Buff.

He was also preceded in death by his grandparents, Joseph Thair and Laura Hartsee Buff, and Jervis Edward and Margaret Walton Gordon.

Surviving are his wife of 42 years, Bertha Martin Buff; one son, Paul Kermitt Buff Jr. of Waverly, Ala.; one daughter, Margaret Buff Egede-Nissen of Burlington; two sisters, Nan Gordon Buff Moss and Helen Walton Buff Pitts of Plum Tree; one granddaughter; and one stepgrandson.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Whittier United Methodist Church’s Outreach Fund, P.O. Box 668, Whittier, NC 28789; or to the Professor Russell “Bud” Brown Scholarship Fund, c/o Lenoir Rhyne College Memorial Fund, P.O. Box 7546, Hickory, NC 28605.
