Lady Cats pull away for victory at Elon
Western Carolina held off Elon 56-48 in a Southern Conference women’s basketball game Jan. 30 at Elon.
Lauren Powell scored 14 points for the Lady Cats. Teyawna Hardy added 11 points, and Chevon Keith had 10.
Elon’s Tierra Bumbrey led all scorers with 16 points, and Myra Donkin had 13.
The game was tied as late as 46-46 on Keith’s jumper at the 5:42 mark, but Western outscored the Lady Phoenix 10-2 the rest of the way.
April Parker started the run with two free throws putting the Lady Cats ahead to stay, 48-46, at the 4:44 mark. Powell followed with a three-pointer, and Western was three of four from the line in the last minute.
Both teams went scoreless during an eight-minute stretch of the first half.
WCU ran off nine unanswered points, the last five by Hardy, to lead 20-13 with 3:44 on the clock.
A pair of three-pointers by Donkin helped cut the gap to 22-21 at intermission.
WCU hit 39.6 percent of its field goal tries while Elon made 34.5 percent of its attempts.
Led by Keith with nine, the Lady Cats controlled the boards 41-34. Kitara McMoore pulled down 14 rebounds for the Lady Phoenix.
Elon committed 15 turnovers, and Western had 14.
Completing the WCU scoring were Parker with six, Monique Dawson and Teshymia Tillman with four apiece, Jessika Johnson with three, and Kendra Eaton and Erin May both had two.
