Firefighters contain blaze
Sylva firefighters controlled a Tuesday fire at the Ken Lee residence on Mills Branch Road. An attached workshop where the fire started was destroyed, and the rest of the house suffered heat and smoke damage, according to Sylva Fire Chief Mike Beck, far left. Smoke and flames were visible when they arrived on the scene around 12:15 p.m., but firefighters were able to contain the blaze, Beck said. Lee, far right, was not home when the fire started, but his wife, June was. She escaped without injury, Beck said. The fire was accidental and started behind a wood stove in the workshop, according to Fire Marshal Todd Dillard. Members of the Sylva Fire Department were assisted by firefighters from Balsam and Cullowhee as well as WestCare EMS, the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office and the Sylva Police Department. “Sylva, Cullowhee and Balsam did a great job in saving what they did,” Dillard said. – Herald photo by Nick Breedlove
