Former Commissioners’ Chairman Bruce Wike dies
William Bruce Wike Sr., 69, of Fred Smith Road, Tuckasegee, died unexpectedly Monday, Jan. 30, 2006, at Harris Regional Hospital.
Services will be held at 1 p.m. today (Thursday, Feb. 2) in the chapel of Melton-Riddle Funeral Home with the Rev. Jeff Powell officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Memorial Gardens. The family was scheduled to receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 1, at the funeral home.
He was born in Buncombe County and had lived in Jackson County all his life. A graduate of Western Carolina University, he was dean of Student Affairs at Southwestern Community College and a veteran of the U.S. Air Force. From 1970-78 her served as chairman of the Jackson County Board of Commissioners and county manager. He was a member of Cullowhee Baptist Church. He was a son of the late Homer and Jessie Snelson Wike.
He was also preceded in death by one brother, Clarence Wike.
Surviving are his wife of 42 years, Peggy Smith Wike; two sons, Mark E. Wike of Tuckasegee and William B. Wike Jr. of Cary; five brothers, James Seamore Wike of Oak Ridge, Tenn., H. Howard Wike of Asheville, Orville Wike and Alva Wike, both of Cullowhee, and Davie Wike of Atlanta; and three grandchildren.
Memorials may be made to the New Century Scholars Program at SCC or the Jackson County Rescue Squad.
Mary Henry
Mary Mae Harris Henry, 92, of Trenton, Mich., died Friday, Jan. 20, 2006.
Services were held Sunday, Jan. 22, in the Trenton Chapel of the Martenson Family of Funeral Homes with the Rev. Mark Raitz officiating. Interment was in Michigan Memorial Park.
She was born May 23, 1913, in Sylva to the late Dock and Eva Harris.
She was also preceded in death by her husband, Frank Henry; three sisters, Verna Lee Hooper, Klondia Parris and Nona Jones; and two brothers, Robert Harris and Hubert Harris.
Surviving are two daughters, Margaret Henry and Phyllis Proud, both of Trenton; one son, Dick Henry, of Trenton; one twin sister, Faye Whitaker of Sylva; 11 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and three great-great grandchildren.
Joyce Houston
Joyce Hooper Houston, 74, of Waynesville, died Wednesday, Jan. 25, 2006, at Mt. Area Solace Center in Asheville.
Services were held at 4 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 28, at St. Andrews Episcopal Church in Canton. Burial was in Fairview Memorial Gardens.
She enjoyed reading and helping her neighbors. She was a daughter of the late John and Irene Ashe Hooper.
Surviving are one daughter, Tammy Whited of Canton; one sister, Sue Hooper Painter of Sylva; and two grandchildren.

Rose Isaac, 92, of Sylva, died Tuesday, Jan. 24, 2006, in an area hospital.

Geraldine Murphy
Geraldine Vera Murphy, 87, of Sylva, died Monday, Jan. 23, 2006, in a local hospital after a period of declining health.

Brandon Standingdeer
Brandon “Nune” Standingdeer, 28, of Cherokee’s Wolfetown community, died Wednesday, Jan. 25, 2006, in Cherokee.
Services were held at 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 27, at Macedonia Baptist Church with the Revs. Jim Park and James “Bo” Parris officiating. Burial was in Standingdeer Family Cemetery.
Pallbearers were his brothers, Takashi and Yona Cruz, Dustin French, Greg French, Danny Swayney and Mike Drakeford.
A native of Cherokee, he was a firefighter for the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians and was a traditional Cherokee dancer. He was a rock mason, and enjoyed skateboarding, playing video games and listening to music.
He was preceded in death by his grandmother, Mary French Standingdeer.
Surviving are his mother, Vicki Standingdeer of Cherokee; his father, Wiggins Blackfox of Cherokee; one sister, Akikko Cruz of Cherokee; two brothers, Takashi and Yona Cruz, both of Cherokee; and grandfather John Standingdeer Sr.

Kirk Locust
Kirk Locust, 35 of Cherokee’s Wolfetown community, died Monday, Jan. 23, 2006, in Baltimore, Md., due to injuries sustained in a construction accident.
Services were held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 28, at Goose Creek Baptist Church with the Revs. Arthur Locust, Hoover Nations and Randall Watkins officiating. Burial was in Locust Family Cemetery.
A native of Swain County, he had lived most of his life in Jackson County. He worked for Bradshaw Construction Co. and was a member of Rock Springs Baptist Church. He was an outdoorsman and NASCAR fan of Dale Earnhart Jr. He was a son of Arthur Locust Jr. of Cherokee and the late Ollie Reed.
In addition to his mother, he was also preceded in death by his grandparents, Lucinda Reed, Sam Reed and Sally Junaluska Locust.
Surviving in addition to his father are his son, Ant Locust of Cherokee; one sister, Brittany Locust of Cherokee; three brothers, Samuel F. Reed, Luke Locust and Cameron Locust, all of Cherokee; and grandfather, Arthur Locust Sr. of Cherokee.

Charlotte Hensley
Charlotte Shuler Hensley, 93, of East Main St., Sylva, died Tuesday, Jan. 24, 2006, at Mountain Trace Nursing Center after a period of declining health.
Services were held at 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 27, in the chapel of Melton-Riddle Funeral Home with the Revs. Eddie Stillwell, Charles Dean and Melissa Lamm officiating. Burial was in Fairview Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers were John David Sweney, Charles Ashley Lamm, Ken Johnson, Steve Alexander, Steven Alexander and Eric Dean.
A native of Swain County, she had lived in Jackson County most of her life. She was an avid reader and member of Jarrett Memorial Baptist Church. She was a daughter of the late James David and Ellen Mills Shuler.
She was also preceded in death by her husband, Frank B. Hensley, who died in 1985; and two grandsons.
Surviving are two daughters, Frankie Ammons of Waynesville and Sara Allison of Sylva; four sons, Paul Hensley and Harold Hensley, both of Sylva, and James “Jim” Hensley and Walter Joe Hensley, both of Waynesville; eight grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Alma Robinson
Alma McCall Robinson, 89, of Zeb Alley Road, Cashiers, died Sunday, Jan. 29, 2006, at Kingsbridge House in Brevard.
Services were held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 1, at Cashiers Baptist Church, of which she was a member for 57 years, with the Revs. Art Fowler and Robert Driggers officiating. Burial was in Pisgah Gardens in Brevard.
Pallbearers were Benny Rice, Daren Robinson, Garrett Robinson, Larry Moss, Tim Fowler and G.F. Rice.
She was born Jan. 31, 1916, in Jackson County, and was a lifelong resident of the county. She worked for several years at High Hampton Inn and Carolina Mountain Preserve, but spent much of her life as a homemaker. She enjoyed quilting, sewing, cooking, and making jams and jellies. She served in many leadership roles in her church. She and her husband moved into Kingsbridge House in September. She was the last surviving child of nine born to the late Willie Hick McCall and Anna Fowler McCall.
She was also preceded in death by her husband of 65 years, Clarence “Cub” Robinson, who died exactly one week before her; one son, Larry; five brothers, Ralph McCall, Roy McCall, Herbert McCall, Albert McCall and Leamon McCall; and three sisters, Grace Moffitt, Cordelia Crowe and Arizona Bumgarner.
Surviving are two sons, Charles of Jupiter, Fla., and Bill of Knoxville; one daughter, Donna Robinson of Brevard; seven grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Gloria Hinson
Gloria Bender Hinson of Cullowhee died Tuesday, Jan. 24, 2006.
Services were held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 28, at St. Agnes Episcopal Church, of which she was a member, with the Rev. Dorothy Pratt officiating. Burial was in St. David’s Cemetery.
A native of Decatur, Ill., she received an associate’s degree from Orlando Junior college, a bachelor’s degree from the University of Florida and a master’s degree from Stetson University. She was an educator who enjoyed teaching reading, and was a member of the Daughters of the King and Delta Kappa Gamma. She was a daughter of the late David and Dorothy Bender.
Surviving are her husband of 33 years, Fred Hinson; two sons, Jon Henry Wiggins of Springfield, Mo., and James Cecil Wiggins Jr. of St. Marks, Fla.; one sister, Shirley Nelson of Orlando, Fla.; and two granddaughters.
