Two Lady Mustangs are injured in wreck
By Carey Phillips
Two members of the starting lineup for Smoky Mountain High School’s undefeated women’s basketball team were injured in an automobile accident around 4:30 p.m. Monday (Jan. 23).
Senior guard Ashley Coggins and freshmen center Ashley Robinson were both treated and released at Harris Regional Hospital. They sustained several bruises and missed Tuesday’s 65-44 victory over Tuscola.
It was not known at Herald press time when they would resume action. The Lady Mustangs (17-0) were scheduled to play at Cherokee on Wednesday before hosting Brevard in a Western Athletic Conference game Friday.
Smoky Mountain is ranked fourth in the state among 2-A teams, according to NCPreps.com and is number one among all Western North Carolina teams in a poll by the Asheville Citizen-Times and WLOS-TV.
“We’re thankful their injuries weren’t any more serious than they are,” Coach Cindi Simmons said. “It just puts everything in perspective.”
The accident occurred at the intersection of Skyland Drive and Chipper Curve Road. Coggins was driving a 1997 Toyota west on Skyland Drive, with Robinson as her passenger, en route to practice at the school gym.
A 1993 Buick operated by David Mills, 42, of Cherokee, pulled from Chipper Curve Road into the eastbound land of Skyland Drive striking the Coggins vehicle, according to Sylva Police Chief Jeff Jamison.
Mills was charged with an unsafe movement.
