Spiro presents Jackson promotions to EDC
By Justin Goble
Officials from the county’s Economic Development Commission Monday learned how Jackson County is advertising itself to tourists.
The report came during the EDC’s Jan. 23 meeting.
Jackson County Chamber of Commerce Director Julie Spiro presented various promotional materials to EDC officials. These included a new magazine titled “Our Town,” a “quick facts” brochure, new trail maps and Jackson County “Chap Stick.” She also showed coverage the county has received in Our State magazine and the N.C. Travel Guide.
Spiro announced the planned 107-mile “Tour de Tuck” bicycle race, which is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 10. She said the race will get competitors and spectators to spend money in the county at a time when tourism is down.
In other business Jan. 23:
– Chris Matheson was sworn in as Sylva’s representative to the EDC.
Matheson is replacing John Faulk, the Sylva’s previous representative.
Faulk resigned in October to seek a seat on Dillsboro’s town board, which he later won.
– Joblink coordinator Ann Howell told officials the county’s Employment Security Commission is working with employers to offer on-the-job training to prospective employees.
“It’s a good incentive to hire people who want to learn a new job,” Howell said.
Under the plan, the ESC is agreeing to repay employers 50 percent of the employees salary during the training period.
– The next EDC meeting is scheduled for Feb. 20. It will begin at 5 p.m. with a work session regarding audit procedures. The regular meeting will follow immediately afterwards.
