West was led by Brooke Holliday with 13 points and Brooke Stanley with 11.

“We successfully ended our four-game road trip,” Coach Cindi Simmons said. “We overcame a slow start and a West Henderson team that began the game shooting well. Defensively, we held them to seven points in the second quarter while we exploded for 28.”

She noted DeGraffenreid, Haggard and Laury Brown all played well in the second period while the Lady Mustangs took control of the game.

West used a 9-2 run, including four by Kerby Barkdoll, to go up 9-4 on Lindsey Pate’s basket with 5:18 to go in the first period.

The Lady Falcons were on top 19-13 when Pate scored at the 1:39 mark, and they led 19-15 at the quarter break.

With DeGraffenreid scoring 10 and Haggard adding six, SM started the second period with an 18-2 spurt for a 33-21 advantage with 3:53 to play in the half.

Jenna Carpenter’s three-pointer highlighted a string of nine unanswered points upping the margin to 42-25 when Ashley Coggins scored with 39 seconds left.

SM led 43-26 at intermission.

DeGraffenreid scored the last four points of the third stanza, which ended with the Lady Mustangs leading 57-36.

She added the first four of the final period for the game’s biggest lead, 61-36, with 7:33 on the clock.

DeGraffenreid made 12 field goals and 12 free throws. Haggard hit five field goals and four foul shots.

Brown finished with seven points, Carpenter and Kelli Woodard both scored three, and Coggins and Ashley Robinson had two apiece.

Brown pulled down eight rebounds.

DeGraffenreid and Haggard shared the Hammer Award for hustle stats. DeGraffenreid had 12 deflections, 10 steals, six offensive rebounds, four loose balls and three blocks. Haggard had seven deflections, five steals, three loose balls and one offensive rebound.

The Lady Mustang JVs won 46-29 as Cayla Cucumber scored 19 points.

SM led at quarter breaks by scores of 10-4, 21-6 and 37-11.

“West approached us with one of the most aggressive defenses we’ve faced in the conference,” Coach Ollin Dunford said.

After struggling early, he noted the team settled down and played well.

Sarah Newbold was singled out for providing a spark off the bench.
