The Sylva Herald prints obituaries free of charge as a service to its readers.

When possible, obituaries should be submitted to The Herald from the funeral home in charge of arrangements. Information received will be printed in our standard obituary format. As is the case with all information submitted to The Herald, we reserve the right to edit obituary information to fit our standard format.

We publish names of the deceased's children; we also include the number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren. We do not include in-laws, cousins, nieces and nephews or special friends.

Included in a brief history of the deceased is items such as their employment, professional, civic, community and religious affiliations. We omit personal tributes.

Main Street merchant Dux dies Sunday at her home

Elizabeth May Pittman Dux, 57, of Sylva, died Sunday, Jan. 22, 2006, at her residence following a period of declining health.

Services were held at 5 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 24, at Sylva First United Methodist Church.

A native of Greenville, S.C., she was a student in the Greenville School System and graduated from Wesleyan College in Macon, Ga. She was a resident of Sylva for much of her life, and also lived in Vallejo, Calif., and Belmont. She worked for the American Red Cross for two years, serving in Korea for one year as a USO coordinator.

She worked for the Pioneer Girl Scout Council as a field director, and later served as president of the Pisgah Girl Scout Council. She served as a national delegate for Gairl Scouts of America, and was recently honored for 50 years of service to the group. She owned and operated Bessie May & Co., a downtown Sylva business. She was a member of the Sylva Garden Club, Kudzu Players Community Theater, Smoky Mountain High School’s Band Boosters and Twentieth Century Club, and was past president of the Newcomers Club. She was a talented crafter, and was a founding member of Dogwood Crafters Cooperative and Mountain Laurel Smocking Club. She was a member of Sylva First United Methodist Church, and served in many leadership roles there. She was a daughter of the late Ernest and Rebecca Powell Pittman.

Surviving are one daughter, Anna Elizabeth; and two sons, Michael Christopher and Patrick Alexander.

Retired WCU administrator, professor, Gilman dies at 74

Albert Franklin Gilman III, 74, of Cullowhee, died Tuesday, Jan. 17, 2006, at his home.

Burial will be in Mt. Vernon, Maine.

He was born in 1931 on the campus of the University of Chicago. He graduated from Northwestern University with his B.S. in 1952, received his M.A. in mathematics from the University of Montana and a second M.A. from Indiana University. In 1963 he received his Ph.D. in non-commutative rings.

He served in the U.S. Army in Kaiserslautern, Germany, in the early 1950s. He taught biology at Lubec High School in Maine, taught mathematics at Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine, and was chairman of the Division of Sciences and Mathematics at the College of the Virgin Islands for three years. In 1969, he came to Western Carolina University as assistant vice president for academic affairs, and soon became vice president for academic affairs. In 1972, he was called to Washington to head the Republican Steering Committee for the U.S. House of Representatives. In 1974, he ran unsuccessfully for the U.S. House seat in the 11th Congressional District of North Carolina. He returned to teach mathematics at Western until his retirement in 1997.

In 1978, he took his wife and seven small children to Sofia, Bulgaria, where he studied topology with a grant from the National Academy of Sciences. In 1982, he studied intellectual history with Prof. Edward Shills of the Committee for Social Thought at the University of Chicago.

An avid traveler and polyglot, he was fond of Eastern Europe and traveled extensively in Romania and Bulgaria. He visited the holy sites of Greece, Russia, the Holy Land, Italy and Spain. As a Greek Orthodox Christian, he served as president of the Parish Council for Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church in Asheville and chanted there for eight years. He was a member of Sons of the American Revolution, Society of the War of 1812 and Veteran Corps of Artillery. He was a member of AHEPA and had belonged to both the Sylva and Bryson City Rotary Clubs.

He was also known as Albert Gilman of Paisley in Scotland. As Baron of Paisley, Laird Paisley enjoyed traveling to Scotland and attending meetings of the Convention of the Baronage. He was proud of his two libraries, with books spanning a broad range of intellectual interests. He was an editor of the Caribbean Journal of Science and Mathematics and a founder of Southern Media Corporation and Center for the Promotion of Poetry. He was a son of the late Professor and Mrs. Albert F. Gilman Jr.

Surviving are his wife of 41 years, Mia Peterson Gilman; five sons, Dr. Albert F. Gilman IV of Decatur, Ill., Clifford Gilman of New Castle, N.H., Nicholas Gilman of Spartanburg, S.C., Henry Gilman of Shallotte and Peter Gilman of the home; five daughters, Dr. Eugenia Gray of Suffolk, Va., Patience Heenan of Bradenton, Fla, Anastasia Pahno of Douglasville, Ga., Alexandra Gilman of the home, and Georgia Gilman of Tirana, Albania; one sister, Regina Sharpe of Carolina Shores; and 13 grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to St. Gregory Palamas Monastery, P.O. Box 398, Etna, CA 96027, to Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church of Asheville or to the Community Table of Sylva.

John Rhinehart

012606johnrhinehartJohn Berry “J.B.” Rhinehart Jr., 72, of Waynesville, died Wednesday, Jan. 18, 2006, at his residence.

Services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 21, in the Waynesville chapel of Wells Funeral Home with the Revs. Eugene Osborne and Larry Coates officiating. Interment was in Plott Cemetery at Saunook.

A native of Haywood County, he was a U.S. Army Veteran, having served in the Korean War. He was a shipping clerk at Dayco for 30 years and preached for 40 years. He enjoyed hunting and fishing, and was a member of Hyatt Creek Freewill Baptist Church. He was a son of Loretta Griffin Rhinehart of Waynesville and the late John Berry Rhinehart Sr.

In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by three sisters, Edna Rhinehart, Linda Bolin, and Wilena Ammons; and one brother, Hilliard Rhinehart.

Surviving in addition to his mother are his wife of 53 years, Margaret Rhinehart; three daughters, Debra R. Mintz and Jonnie Sue Kirkpatrick, both of Waynesville, and Trenia Sims of Tuckasegee; one sister, Effie Yarborough of Waynesville; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Dorothy Toussaint

Dorothy Mary Russell Toussaint, 95, of Sylva, died Sunday, Jan. 22, 2006, at Mountain Trace Nursing Center after an extended illness.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 28, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, of which she was a member, with Father Ray Williams officiating. The family will receive friends following the service. A private burial will be held.

A native of Sheboygan Falls, Wis., she had lived in Jackson County since 1974. She retired from United Airlines as an engineering aid, and was an avid cook and baker. She was the last child of the late Norman and Mary “Mollie” Russell.

Surviving are one daughter, Judith Pilch of Sylva; three grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson.

Memorials may be made to the Salvation Army, 290 Pigeon St., Waynesville, NC 28786.

Anne Cope

Anne Calhoun Cope, 60, of Sylva, died Monday, Jan. 16, 2006.

No services are planned.

A native of Jackson County, where she has lived the past 19 years, she was the owner and operator of Cope Superette and News Stand.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Lorene Mathis; husband, Edwin C. Cope; and one brother, Joey Moore.

Surviving are two daughters, Margie Moore of Knoxville, Tenn., and Tanya Calhoun of Sylva; one sister, Kathy Thompson of Tuckasegee; two brothers, Tim Moore of Layton, Utah, and Ted Moore of Sylva; and three grandchildren.

Melton-Riddle Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.



Henry Timberlake

Henry O. Timberlake, 81, of Sylva, died Wednesday, Jan. 18, 2006.

Private services will be held at a later date.

He was born in Richmond, Va., but lived most of his life in Jacksonville, Fla., before moving to Sylva.

Surviving are his wife, Winnie Lee Nell Timberlake; three sons, Thomas Timberlake of San Antonio, Fla., Louis Timberlake of Jacksonville, Fla., and Keith Timberlake of Ucon, Idaho; two daughters, Sandra Timberlake of Sylva and Pamela Barron of Lake Worth, Fla.; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.



Bob Carroll

Bob Carroll, 83, of Weldon Hall Road, Sylva, died Tuesday, Jan. 17, 2006, at his residence after a period of declining health.

Services were held at 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 19, in the chapel of Melton-Riddle Funeral Home with the Revs. Clifford Parker and Roger Stewman officiating. Burial was in Old Savannah Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Justin Hall, Nathan Hall, Doug Hall, Joe Roberts, Dan Buchanan and Robert Anders.

A native of Hamilton County, Tenn., he was a retired funeral director, having owned and operated Alligood Carroll Funeral Home in Miami, Fla. He was a member of the Miami Rotary Club, where he was past president, and was active in the Knights of Columbus. He was a son of the late Clifford and Carrie Spencer Carroll.

He was also preceded in death by one brother, Louis Carroll; and one sister, Peggy Key.

Surviving is his wife of 47 years, Betty Sutton Carroll.

Art Beiswenger

Arthur “Art” Theodore Beiswenger, 94, of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., formerly of Sylva, died Sunday, Jan. 22, 2006, at University Hospital in Florida after a period of declining health.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 27, at Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church, of which he was a member, with the Rev. Timothy Rall officiating. The family will receive friends from 4 to 6 p.m. today (Thursday, Jan. 26) at Melton-Riddle Funeral Home. Burial will be in Fairview Memorial Gardens.

A native of Wheeling, W. Va., he lived in Jackson County for several years before moving to Florida. He was a retired insurance agent. He was a son of the late George and Bertha Stocker Beiswenger.

He was also preceded in death by his first wife, Dorothy Beiswenger; and his second wife, Beulah Stephens Beiswenger.

Surviving are two grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Memorials may be made to Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church.



Turner Hall

Thomas Turner Hall, 82, of Sutton Branch Road, Sylva, died Monday, Jan. 23, 2006, at his residence after a period of declining health.

Services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 25, in the chapel of Melton-Riddle Funeral Home with the Revs. James Cook and Ricky Conner officiating. Burial was in Old Savannah Baptist Church Cemetery with military rites conducted by William E. Dillard American Legion Post 104.

Pallbearers were Scottie Buchanan, Doyle Buchanan, Wayne Jones, Benny Henson, Anthony Henson and Issac Hall.

A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, he retired from the Drexel Heritage Furniture Plant. He was a veteran of World War II and an avid bear hunter.

Surviving are his wife of 59 years, Jessie Buchanan Hall; one daughter, Jane Hall of the home; one son, Bill Hall of Sylva; one sister, Mary Barker of Washington; one brother, Scroop Hall of Sylva; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.



Verayle Franks

Verayle “Bill” Calhoun Franks, 97, died Saturday, Jan. 14, 2006, at Mountain Trace Nursing Center.

Services were held at 3 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 18, at Bryson City First Baptist Church. Burial was in Bryson City Cemetery.

She was born in 1908 in Swain County’s Medlin community, which is now under Fontana Lake. The family moved to Bryson City in 1919, but kept their home at Sugar Fork until the land became part of the Great Smoky Mountain National Park in 1943. Until age 90, she visited the Hazel Creek area often on the cemetery tours.

She was educated in Swain County Public Schools, and at Western Carolina Teachers College and Cecils Business College. At 17, she typed the first manuscript for author and naturalist Horace Kephart.

From 1933 to 1936, she was secretary to the Swain County Board of Education, and in 1936 she accepted the position of area supervisor for the WNC Library Commission which she held until 1942.

In 1948, she was asked to head a committee to plan for a Swain County Hospital. In 1950, she became the business manager for Swain County’s 18-bed hospital. In 1942 she assumed the position of administrator and, by the time of her retirement in 1974, she had helped grow the hospital into a 50-bed facility.

She served several terms on the Swain County School Board and was active in Bryson City First Baptist Church. She was a member of the Business and Professional Woman’s Club and the Democratic Women. She moved to Waynesville in 1990. She was the daughter of the late William Clifford Calhoun and Nora Lee Davis Calhoun.

She was also preceded in death by her husband, Gwin Dargan Franks; and one sister, Inez Calhoun.

Surviving are one daughter, Gwen Franks Breese of Waynesville; three grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to WestCare Foundation for Swain County Hospital or to the Bryson City First Baptist Church.

Wayne Owen

Wayne Christopher Columbus Owen, 81, of Tuckasegee, died Wednesday, Jan. 18, 2006, at Transylvania Community Hospital.

Services were held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 21, at Woods Memorial Baptist Church with the Rev. Dan McCall officiating. Burial was in Wolf Mountain Cemetery.

He was a native of Jackson County, and a son of the late Elijah and Jerda Galloway Owen.

He was also preceded in death by one son, Randall Owen; and one daughter, Frances Owen.

Surviving are his wife, Mary Jane Owen; five daughters, Laverne Marchbanks of Piedmont, S.C., Shirley Rogers of Canton, and Irene Owen, Velvet Owen and Dollie Hoxit, all of Tuckasegee; five sons, Harrell Owen, Jimmie Owen and Foye Owen, all of Tuckasegee, Bobby Owen of Balsam Grove and Dwayne Owen of Lake Toxaway; one sister, Lorene Davis of Pickens, S.C.; one brother, Edward Owen of Rosman; 19 grandchildren; and 26 great-grandchildren.

Tammie Seay

Tamara Susan “Tammie” Seay, 18, of Cherokee’s Yellowhill community, died Friday, Jan. 13, 2006.

Services were held at 2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 23, in the chapel of Crisp Funeral Home with Ray Kinsland officiating. Burial was in Bethel Cemetery.

A native of Cherokee, she was a daughter of Angela Mitchell of Cherokee and Daniel Robert Seay of Mars Hill.

Surviving in addition to her parents are one daughter, Jailyn Ethelyn Bird; two sisters, Danielle Clerese Mitchell of Asheville, and Melissa Seay of Robbinsville; maternal grandmother, Mary “Boomer” Lambert of Bryson City; maternal stepgrandfather, William Hartman Lambert of Bryson City; and paternal grandmother, Jeanette Jumper of Robbinsville.



Clarence Robinson

Clarence A. “Cub” Robinson, 85, of Zeb Alley Road, Cashiers, died Sunday, Jan. 22, 2006, at Kingsbridge House in Brevard following a long illness.

Services were held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 25, at Cashiers Baptist Church with the Revs. Art Fowler and Robert Driggers officiating. Burial was in Pisgah Memorial Gardens, Brevard, with full military honors conducted by American Legion Post 88 and VFW Post 4309.

Pallbearers were Ray Fowler, Dean Madden, Gary, Daren, and Garrett Robinson, and “Hub” Powell.

Honorary pallbearers were the deacons of the church.

A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, he was a self-employed heavy equipment operator. He served as a deacon of Cashiers Baptist Church for 32 years. He was a member of Woodmen of the World, and was an Army veteran of World War II. He was a son of the late Carl C. and Lake Alexander Robinson.

He was also preceded in death by one son, Larry; four sisters, Lillian Moody, Louise Stewart, Gladys Crumbly, and Hazel Clark; and one brother, James Robinson.

Surviving are his wife of 65 years, Alma McCall Robinson; two sons, Charles Robinson of Jupiter, Fla., and Bill Robinson of Knoxville, Tenn.; one daughter, Donna Robinson of Brevard; one brother, Carl C. Robinson, Jr. of Cullowhee; one sister, Emma Jean Shook of Greenville, S.C.; seven grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Harry Sentelle

Harry Glenn Sentelle, 84, of Pisgah Forest, died Tuesday, Jan. 17, 2006.

Services were held at 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 20, at Pisgah Forest Baptist Church, of which he was a member, with the Revs. Bobby Owings and Tommy Owen officiating. Burial was in Pisgah Gardens Cemetery.

He was a native of Transylvania County, and a U.S. Navy veteran, having served during World War II. He was the son of the late Glover and Nellie Allison Sentelle.

He was also preceded in death by his wife, Cleo Chastain, who died in 1982.

Surviving are two sons, James M. Sentelle and Greg Sentelle, both of Pisgah Forest; two daughters, Dianne Gholson of Cullowhee and Pamela K. Whitener of Pisgah Forest; one sister, Lois S. Brown of Pisgah Forest; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Lillian Lossiah

Lillian Shell Lossiah, 89, of Cherokee’s Yellowhill community, died Wednesday, Jan. 18, 2006, at Tsali Care Center.

Services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 21, at Piney Grove Baptist Church with Brother Arthur Locust, Ray Kinsland and the Rev. David Woods officiating. Burial was in Lossiah Family Cemetery.

A native and lifelong resident of Cherokee, she was a lifelong member of Piney Grove Baptist Church. She worked 33 years in the production of Unto These Hills and was a basket maker. She was a foster grandparent for many years, was a full-blooded Cherokee and was fluent in the Cherokee language. She was a daughter of the late Ute and Mattie Owl Shell.

She was also preceded in death by her husband, Jess Lossiah Sr.; two sons, Charles Lossiah and John Henry Lossiah; one infant daughter, Amanda; several brothers and sisters; and one granddaughter.

Surviving are one daughter, Anne Cooper of Cherokee; six sons, Jonas Leander Lossiah, Jesse James Lossiah Jr., Calvin Ernest Lossiah, James Randall Lossiah and DeWayne Allen Lossiah, all of Cherokee, and Joshua Boyd Lossiah of the home; one sister, Cecilia Miller of Cherokee; one brother, Courtney Shell of Cherokee; 20 grandchildren; 53 great-grandchildren; and 11 great-great-grandchildren.

James Allen

James Ricky Allen, 40, of U.S. 441 South, Sylva, died Monday, Jan. 23, 2006, at Harris Regional Hospital after a period of declining health.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. today (Thursday, Jan. 26) in the chapel of Melton-Riddle Funeral Home with the Revs. David Souderes and Dennis Burrell officiating. Burial will be in Greens Creek Cemetery. The family was scheduled to receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 25, at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be Danny Buchanan, Joe Brooks, Jeff Nations, Randy Ashe, Evie Buchanan and Mike Deitz.

He was a native of Jackson County, where he had lived most of his life. He was a 1983 graduate of Sylva-Webster High School and had worked for Western Builders. He was a member of Old Savannah Baptist Church and was an avid outdoorsman. He enjoyed bowling and playing softball. He was a son of Adenia Kay Estes and the late Jimmy Dean Allen.

Surviving in addition to his mother are his wife of 10 years, Teresa Devlin Allen; one daughter, Michaela Allen of the home; and two brothers, Matt Allen of Sylva and Scottie Allen of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

Eddie Bradley

Larry “Eddie” Bradley, 49, of Cherokee’s Wolfetown community, died Sunday, Jan. 22, 2006, at Cherokee Indian Hospital.

Services were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 24, at Acquoni Baptist Church with Ray Kinsland, and the Revs. Ed Kilgore and James “Red” Bradley officiating. Burial was in John Bradley Cemetery.

A native of Cherokee, he was a graduate of Lees-McRae College and was an avid Dallas Cowboys fan. He was a son of the late John and Mary “Edie” Jackson Bradley.

Surviving are three sons, John Edward Bradley of Cherokee, Ryan David Bradley of Greenville, S.C., and Raine Douglas Bradley of Whittier; one daughter, Samantha Christine Bradley of Cherokee; one brother, John Richard Bradley Jr. of Cherokee; one sister, Deborah Bradley of Cherokee; and four grandchildren.

Jacqueline Owl

Jacqueline Eran Bazemore Owl, 46, of Cherokee’s Birdtown community, died Friday, Jan. 20, 2006, in a Buncombe County hospital.

Graveside services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 22, in Robert Owl Family Cemetery with the Rev. Percy Cunningham officiating.

A native of Henderson County, she lived in Jackson County for the last two years. She was the daughter of Virgil Marshall of Hendersonville and the late Jackie Marshall.

Surviving in addition to her father are her husband, William Bazemore Owl; four daughters, Evannia Lee and Jessica Bazemore, both of Cherokee, and Sabrina Bazemore and Celeste Lee, both of Hendersonville; two brothers, Rick Marshall and Randy Marshall, both of Hendersonville; and six grandchildren.

Crisp Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.



Margaret Fox

Margaret Virginia Fox, 79, of Sylva, died Thursday, Jan. 19, 2006, at Harris Regional Hospital after a period of declining health.

Services were held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 22, in the chapel of Melton-Riddle Funeral Home with the Rev. Willard Cox officiating. A private committal service was held at the funeral home after the service. Burial was in Keener Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Bob Fox, Benny Bradsher, Gene Bradsher, Brandon Boughman, Tom Johnson, Randy McConnell, Shannon Ashe, Gary Wood and Edmond Reed.

She was a native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, and was a member of the Church of God. She was a daughter of the late Grayson and Jane Gibbs Fox.

She was also preceded in death by three sisters, Otelia Wood, Nell Wood and Lettie Melton; and two brothers, Clyde Fox and Ray Fox.

Surviving are three sisters, Minnie Reed of Enka, and Hazel Buckner and Ercie McConnell, both of Sylva.
