Learning the language

012606cherokeeimmersion
Ethan Clapsaddle and son, Tawodi are welcomed into the new Cherokee language immersion classroom by Principal Chief Michell Hicks. The blocks used for play have the Cherokee syllabary invented by Sequoyah for the Cherokee over a century ago. The language immersion program provides a standard curriculum for children so their educational process is enhanced rather than hindered by a second language. Past generations were punished for speaking the Cherokee language and that negative reinforcement led to a decline in the language. Evidence of a resurgence can be seen in Cherokee language street signs and priorities of the Cherokee Central Schools.
