Kyle Greathouse leads WCU to victory over Greensboro
Kyle Greathouse poured in 29 points leading Western Carolina to an 87-76 Southern Conference basketball victory on Jan. 16 at UNC-Greensboro.
Greathouse made seven of nine three-pointers, hit his only two-pointer and was six of six from the foul line. His exploits, along with the 18 points he scored in the previous game, earned him conference player of the week honors.
David Berghoefer also had a big game for the Catamounts with 23 points and seven rebounds. Negus McKenna contributed 13 points.
Greensboro’s Ricky Hickman scored 26 points in front of 1,218 fans at Fleming Gym. Kyle Hines finished with 19 points and eight rebounds. Kevin Oleksiak added 14, and Dwayne Johnson had 10.
The Spartans were in charge early and led 19-12 after a three-pointer by Bart Tooms with 12:48 to go in the first half.
The Cats took their first lead at 24-23 as Greathouse hit a three-pointer with 9:55 on the clock. That was part of a 12-2 run, capped by Corey Muirhead’s layup, making it 28-23 at the 7:39 mark.
Western extended the margin to 38-30 with 3:36 on the clock as Berghoefer and Greathouse nailed three-pointers during an 8-1 spurt.
The Cats led 41-35 at intermission.
UNC-G regained the lead at 46-44 on Johnson’s trey with 15:04 to go.
Greathouse answered with a three-pointer giving WCU the lead for good, 47-46, with 14:51 on the clock. The shot started a 9-2 run, capped by another Greathouse trey, making it 53-48 at the 11:56 mark.
The margin reached 68-57 after McKenna’s jumper with 7:12 to play.
The Cats were unstoppable in the second half as they made 15 of 19 field goals, including six of eight treys. They finished the night shooting 58.5 percent from the floor.
The Spartans also shot well as they made 54.9 percent of their field goal tries.
WCU had a 30-22 rebounding advantage.
UNC-G committed 16 turnovers, and the Cats had 15.
Completing the WCU scoring were Antonio Russell with seven, Trey Hopkins with six, Muirhead with five and Eric Wilson with four.
