Indian Dance Theatre to perform at Harrah’s
The American Indian Dance Theatre will perform at Harrah’s Cherokee Casino and Hotel Pavilion on Saturday, Feb. 4, at 7 p.m.
The benefit performance is sponsored by the Cherokee Historical Association, the Cherokee Preservation Foundation and Harrah’s Cherokee Casino and Hotel. All proceeds from this event will be used to further theatrical education through the Cherokee Historical Association.
“Dances from a Tribal Life” celebrates the ancient and the modern by presenting dances performed for hundreds of years, some with original choreography reflecting the present. The new production features hoop dancer Eddie Swimmer, a member of the Eastern Band of Cherokee. Swimmer is an original member of the American Indian Dance Theatre.
The hoop dance is a fast-moving, non-stop dance during which the dancer manipulates as many as 30 hoop reeds at a time to form the shapes of flowers, eagles, turtles, butterflies and other natural things.
The American Indian Dance Theatre will also conduct a dance theater residency in Cherokee on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 3 and 4 in the dining hall at the Mountainside Theatre. This residency will be led by the new choreographer and the Dance Theatre cast and is open for potential performers. The residency will begin at 2 p.m. on Friday and run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.
The American Indian Dance Theatre will also conduct educational outreach programs for the Cherokee Central Schools. These programs consist of a short performance and a question-and-answer session for the children.
Hanay Geiogamah, the director of the American Indian Dance Theatre, has also been selected to direct the new production of the outdoor drama “Unto These Hills,” which is scheduled to open June 8 at Mountainside Theatre. Geoigamah is a professor of theater at the University of California at Los Angeles and founded the American Indian Dance Theatre.
