SPRING CLEANING has started early at the Friends of the Library Book Store on Main Street across from The Sylva Herald office. This is the time books on the shelves are reviewed and some are marked down for our sale table. Non-fiction is the major focus of the new sale, but fiction books are also included. The sale table currently has a large selection of self-help and religious books marked 25 cents for a hardback or two for a quarter for paperbacks. Other topics will be included weekly. Stop by and get some great books at great prices, a Friends’ spokesman said.

THE WATERSHED ASSOCIATION OF THE TUCKASEIGEE RIVER will kick off its 2006 activities with a public meeting Monday, Jan. 23, at 7 p.m. in the Sylva City Hall. Tuckaseigee Water and Sewer Authority Director Joe Cline will use this meeting to describe proposed improvements to TWSA’s North River Road water treatment plant. The session will provide the community a chance to review the system and ask questions before the mandatory public meetings in late spring. Those attending are invited to come early and socialize. During January WATR’s members are discussing projects and activities for the spring and summer. At the top of the list is kick-starting the community planning in the Greens and Savannah watersheds – the group is looking for both participants and leaders. The overall objective is to improve water quality in these creeks during the next five years. WATR will also focus on reducing bacterial inputs throughout the Tuckasegee River system; working with contractors to reduce erosion, sediment, and turbidity; and working with the Eastern Band of Cherokee on common water quality problems. The group also performs routine stream monitoring and is planning canoe/rafting trips, stream cleanups, and outings. WATR Director Roger Clapp invites all interested persons to call the office at (828) 488-8418.
ZAXBY’S opened in Sylva Monday at the former Hardee’s location. Licensee Jim Rodgers, along with his father Tom, invite everyone by for Zaxby’s famous chicken fingers and Buffalo wings. Hours are 10:30 a.m. until 10:30 p.m. Sunday-Thursday and from 10:30 a.m.-midnight Friday and Saturday.
ZAXBY’S licensee Jim Rodgers, along with his father Tom, opened the doors this week to Sylva and Jackson County’s first Zaxby’s, located in the former Hardee’s. A Southeast favorite for chicken fingers and Buffalo wings, the new restaurant operates from 10:30 a.m. until 10:30 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and from 10:30 a.m. until midnight Friday and Saturday. The new Sylva restaurant showcases Zaxby’s unique interior design, featuring a bright, open interior, complemented by vintage memorabilia and signage. The 3,800-square-foot restaurant will provide a seating capacity of 98. Zaxby’s also provides phone-in and drive-through services. Jim and Tom Rodgers, along with general manager Antonio Phelps, said they believe the restaurant – from the atmosphere to the service – will exceed community expectations. Zaxby’s recently celebrated its 300th restaurant opening in Dallas, Ga., as well as its entrance into a ninth state, with its first location opening in Arkansas, as the chain continues to grow throughout the Southeast. An alternative to fast food, Zaxby’s offers fresh, never-frozen, prepared-at-order chicken wings, Fingerz, sandwiches and Zalads. The menu also offers “Zappetizers” including made-from-scratch Spicy Fried Mushrooms. Zaxby’s also offers a variety of Party Platterz perfect for any family gathering or special occasion. Zaxby’s features four salads, or Zalads: The House, The Blue, The Caesar and The Chicken Salad Zalad. All are prepared at order, the first three with grilled or fried chicken. Customers have a choice of buffaloed or blackened chicken when ordering The Blue. The newest Zalad is The Chicken Salad Zalad, made with chunks of white chicken breast meat and celery mixed with Zaxby’s ranch dressing. Each Zalad is assembled at the time the order is placed, versus being pre-made and stored in a cooler. Zaxby’s opened its first restaurant in Statesboro, Ga., in May 1990, and by July 2001 opened its 100th location in Jacksonville, Fla. Zaxby’s celebrated its 200th restaurant opening in its hometown of Athens, Ga., in May 2004.
