Then, then and now
Three views taken from the hill behind Terry’s Produce show the Sylva area in three stages of development. Looking north toward the present-day location of McDonald’s (circled) and Food Lion, the top image (circa 1915) shows a wide-open countryside split only by the road that connected Sylva and Cullowhee. By the time of the middle photo, which was taken 12 to 15 years later, growth is beginning in the area. The Raymond Nicholson home, left foreground, is still visible through the trees in the recent photo, as is the John Wilson house, which still stands behind Performance Motors. Much more has changed in the lower photo, including the construction of Eckerd’s, the Asheville Highway (Business 23), Skyland Care Center on the hill behind McDonald’s and Wayne Smith’s Broad Street trailer park, center left. – Herald file photos (top and middle) and Herald photo by Nick Breedlove |
