The Sylva Herald prints obituaries free of charge as a service to its readers.

When possible, obituaries should be submitted to The Herald from the funeral home in charge of arrangements. Information received will be printed in our standard obituary format. As is the case with all information submitted to The Herald, we reserve the right to edit obituary information to fit our standard format.

We publish names of the deceased's children; we also include the number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren. We do not include in-laws, cousins, nieces and nephews or special friends.

Included in a brief history of the deceased is items such as their employment, professional, civic, community and religious affiliations. We omit personal tributes.

To publish a more detailed obituary or one in another format, the announcement can run as a paid advertisement.

Samuel Short

Samuel Short, 79, of Sylva, died Monday, Jan. 9, 2006.

Services were held at 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 13, in the chapel of Moody Funeral Home with Chaplain Ron Allan officiating. Interment was in Wike Cemetery.

He participated in the Senior Games and volunteered at the Golden Age Center. He enjoyed fishing and working in his yard. He was a son of the late Samuel Short and Myrtrice Wike Short.

He was also preceded in death by one son, Stephen Short; and one brother, Ronald Short.

Surviving are his wife of 57 years, Virginia Short; one daughter, Sammye Torres of Greenville, S.C.; one son, Terry Short of Jackson, Ga.; three sisters, Geraldine Newell of Sylva, Medna Pritchett of Tampa, Fla., and Sandra Hall of Laurinburg; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Moody Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.



Stewart Parker

Stewart S. “Pop” Parker, 83, of Fort Myers, Fla., died Monday, Jan. 9, 2006, at Hope Hospice (Joanne’s House) in Bonita Springs, Fla.

Services were held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 12, at Fort Myers Memorial Gardens and Funeral Home with the Rev. Benny Bagwell officiating.

Pallbearers were his grandsons.

He was born July 13, 1922, in Youngstown, Ohio. He had lived in Fort Myers for 56 years, and spent summers in Sylva. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corp for five years during World War II. He was influential in starting Grace Baptist Temple and Landmark Baptist Church in North Fort Myers, Fla. He was a member of Victory Baptist Church and a son of the late Gertrude Roberts.

He was also preceded in death by his stepfather, James F. Roberts; two brothers, Bill Parker and George Parker; and one grandson.

Surviving are his wife of nearly 62 years, Betty; two daughters, Pat Longo and Connie Parker; two sons, Jim Parker and Mike Parker; one sister, Cora Jean Wentzel; 11 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Hope Hospice of Fort Myers.



Dorothy Mitchell

Dorothy Mitchell, 69, of Cherokee, died Saturday, Jan. 7, 2006.

Services will be held at a later date.

Richard Reynolds

Richard M. Reynolds, 69, of Sylva, died Friday, Oct. 7, 2005, at Halifax Medical Center in Daytona Beach, Fla.

Services will be held from 2 to 5 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 21, at Holiday Inn Express in Dillsboro.

Sen. Master Sgt. Ret. Kenneth A Howze, 54, of San Vito, Italy, formerly of the Ochre Hill community, died Wednesday, Jan. 11, 2006, after a long battle with cancer.

Services were held at 3 p.m. Friday, Jan. 13, in San Vito. Burial was in San Vito Cemetery with military graveside rites conducted by U.S. Air Force members from Aviona Air Base in Northern Italy.

He was born Sept. 20, 1951, in Miami, Fla., and was an avid fishermen. He served 26 years in the U.S. Air Force, received numerous decorations, and served in Vietnam and the first Gulf War. He was a son of William T. Howze of Savannah community and the late Margie Howze.

In addition to his mother, he was also preceded in death by one brother, Lance V. Howze.

Surviving in addition to his father are his wife, Fiorella; one daughter, Serrena; one son, Nicholas; and his grandmother, Ruby L. Knowles.



Oscar Wike

James Oscar “Doc” Wike, 93, of Wike Cemetery Road, Cullowhee, died Wednesday, Jan. 11, 2006, at Harris Regional Hospital after a brief illness.

Services were held at 6 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 12, in the chapel of Melton-Riddle Funeral Home with the Revs. Herman Wike and Mike Farmer officiating. Burial was in Wike Cemetery.

He was born May 23, 1912, in Jackson County, where he lived all his life. He was a member of East LaPorte Methodist Church, and owned and operated a retail store. He was the youngest of eight children born to the late Robert Lee and Florence Fincannon Wike.

He was also preceded in death by seven brothers and sisters.

Surviving are his wife of 72 years, Blanche Potts Wike; one son, Jimmy Lee Wike of Jonesboro, Ga.; one grandson; two stepgrandsons; two great-grandchildren; and two stepgreat-grandchildren.

Alden Phillips

Alden Dale “Sam” Phillips, 73, of Stevenson, Ala., died Sunday, Jan. 15, 2006, in South Pittsburg, Tenn.

Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. today (Thursday, Jan. 19) in New Hope Baptist Church Cemetery with the Rev. Mike Moore officiating. Military honors will be conducted by the U.S. Air Force and William E. Dillard American Legion Post 104.

A native of Jackson County, he moved to Stevenson when Mead Corporation left Sylva. He retired from Mead as process manager and was a member of Stevenson First Baptist Church. He was on the Stevenson Utility Board and was a U.S. Air Force veteran, having served in the Korean War. He was a son of the late Sherman and Essie Bumgarner Phillips.

He was also preceded in death by one son, Gary Michael Phillips; one daughter, Elizabeth Dianne Phillips; his stepmother, Mary Phillips; and one stepsister, Norma Jean Queen.

Surviving are his wife of 50 years, Wanda Blanton Phillips; one son, Danny Phillips of Stevenson.; one daughter, Lisa Ann Watters of Manchester, Tenn.; one half-sister, Linda Sue Shuler of Cullowhee; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Robert Carroll

Robert Carroll of Weldon Hall Road, Sylva, died Tuesday, Jan. 17, 2006, at his residence.

John Paul

John Alden Paul Sr., 95, a longtime summer resident of Cashiers, died Friday, Dec. 30, 2005.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 21, at St. Jude’s Catholic Church in Sapphire.

He attended the Canterbury School in New Milford, Conn., the University of Virginia and received a law degree from the University of Florida in 1934. He practiced law for more than 40 years in Palm Beach County, Fla., where he was active in civic and legal affairs. He was chairman of the Palm Beach Public Employee Relations Committee, and attorney for the town of Palm Beach Shores. He was also chairman of the Palm Beach County Draft Board during the Vietnam War. He was appointed to the Board of Directors of the Palm Beach Bar Association five times, and chairman of the Judicial Qualifications Committee, Client Grievance Committee and president of the Legal Aid Association. He served on the Board of Governors of the Florida Bar and was a member of its Judicial Section Revision Committee.

He served in the U.S. Navy in World War II and was beachmaster for the invasion of Sicily and Utah Beach at Normandy. He fought in Africa and was on the staff of the Amphibious Assault Force 13 in the Pacific.

Upon retirement from the practice of law, he moved to the Jacksonville, Fla., area. He was a member of Tuscawilla Club and Breakers Golf Club in Palm Beach, the Seminole and Timaquana Country Club in Jacksonville, the Plantation Country Club in Ponte Vedra, Fla., and High Hampton, Wildcat Cliffs Golf Club and Wade Hampton Golf Club in North Carolina. He was a son of the late Alexander and Marie Paul.

Surviving are his wife, Virginia Green Paul; five sons, Peter A. Paul of Cashiers, John A. Paul Jr. of Spartanburg, S.C., Frank C. Paul of Baltimore, Allan G. Paul of San Francisco and Richard L. Paul of Lake City, Fla.; a daughter, Malo Paul Harrison of New York; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Cashiers-Glenville Volunteer Fire Department, P.O. Box 886, Cashiers, NC 28717; or to the National Federation of the Blind of North Carolina, 128 Summerlea Dr., Charlotte, NC 28214-1324.

Bernice Brown

Bernice Broome Brown, 97, of Monroe, formerly of Cullowhee, died Wednesday, Jan. 11, 2006, at Carolinas Medical Center after a brief illness.

Services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 14, at Bethlehem United Methodist Church, of which she was a member. Burial was in the church cemetery.

She was born Sept. 24, 1908, in Union County. She was a graduate of Western Carolina University and taught school in Jackson and Union counties for 44 years. She came to Cullowhee with her sister, Selma Broome Middleton, and they both taught at the Cowarts School on Johns Creek at the beginning of their teaching careers. She was a member of Alpha Delta Kappa Sorority for teachers. She was the last of 12 children born to Sidney and Wilma Broome.

She was also preceded in death by her husband, George Brown.

Surviving is one son, George Brown Jr. of Monroe.

Memorials may be made to Bethlehem United Methodist Church, 5300 Nesbit Rd., Waxhaw, NC 28173.

Daniel Gosnell

Daniel J. Gosnell, 54, of Millington, Mich., died Wednesday, Jan. 11, 2005, at his residence.

Services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 17, in the chapel of Melton-Riddle Funeral Home with the Revs. Jim Ed Powell and Larry Bryson officiating. Burial was in Parris Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Dowdy Bradley, Roger Sutton, Lee Ashe, Jeremiah Nicholson, Dustin Nicholson and Lonnie Marty Barner.

He was born March 4, 1951, in Jackson County, and began restoring railroad cars at age 11. His hobby led him into a career of restoring museum pieces, antiques and many other railroad cars throughout the United States. He was a master craftsman with Genesee County Parks and Recreation and was an avid rescuer of animals. He was instrumental in restoring, designing and building the cars for the Huckleberry Railroad. He also restored the Parker Carousel, Parker Wheel, and many structures, signs and displays at Crossroads Village. He enjoyed traveling, hiking, mountain climbing and vacationing. He was a son of Mack B. and Willie M. Biddix Gosnell.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Charles; and two sisters, Muriel and Effie.

Surviving are four sisters, Mary Prior of Sylva, Elaine White of Florida, and Jean Ashe and Yanna Gosnell, both of Tuckasegee; and four brothers, Robert Gosnell of Dillsboro, Joe Gosnell of Salem, Michael Gosnell of Sylva and James Dequana of Louisiana.

Alva Lawlor

Alva Jean Cunningham Lawlor, 66, of Sylva, died Tuesday, Jan. 3, 2006.

Services were held at 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 9, in the chapel of Moody Funeral Home with the Rev. Larry Bryson officiating. Interment was in Swain Memorial Park.

She was born Sept. 10, 1939, and raised in Madison, Wis. She traveled all over Europe and the United States as her husband’s Air Force career took the couple to different places. She worked as a nurse’s aide and a medical clerk. She enjoyed sewing, reading and crafts. She was a daughter of the late Virgil Cunningham and Bernice Presler.

Surviving are her husband, Michael; three children, Christopher, Elliot and James; four sisters; and six grandchildren.

Warren Marshall Clouse, 81, of Skyland Care Center, Sylva, died Friday, Jan. 13, 2006, at Harris Regional Hospital after a period of declining health.

Services were held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 15, in the chapel of Melton-Riddle Funeral Home with the Revs. Roger Stewman and Dr. John Bunn officiating. Burial was in Keener Cemetery.

A native of Jackson County, he was the son of the late Frank and Beulah Warren Clouse.

Surviving are several cousins.



Mary Reagan

Mary Emma Ward Reagan, 79, of Quallatown Road, Whittier, died Sunday, Jan. 15, 2006, at her residence after a period of declining health.

Services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 18, at Qualla Wesleyan Methodist Church, with the Rev. Cody Lambert officiating. Burial was in Tow String Cemetery.

A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, she was a custodian for the National Park Service. She was a member of Hyatt’s Chapel Baptist Church and attended Qualla Wesleyan Methodist Church. She was a daughter of the late John Hardy and Dora Elizabeth Oxner Ward.

She was also preceded in death by her husband, Emmett Reagan, who died in 2004; one brother, Earl Ward; one sister, Annie Mae Myers; and one grandson.

Surviving are one son, Everett Reagan of Cherokee; three brothers, Edward Ward and David Ward, both of Whittier, and Charles Ward of the home; four grandchildren; and one great-grandson.

Mary Catolster

Mary Belle Welch Catolster, 76, of Cherokee’s Wolfetown community, died Wednesday, Jan. 11, 2006, at Cherokee Indian Hospital.

Services were held at noon, Saturday, Jan. 14, at Cherokee United Methodist Church, of which she was a member, with the Rev. Steve Phillippi and James “Bo” Parris officiating. Burial was in Menoch-Catolster Family Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Mark Grant, Brant Grant, Raven Grant, Menoch Grant, Billy Ray Smith, Steven Catolster, Eddie Catt and Randy Catt.

She was born Dec. 15, 1929, in Cherokee. She was a daughter of the late Agnes Calhoun Welch.

She was also preceded in death by her husband, Edmund Menoch Catolster; one brother, Adam Welch; one daughter, Jean Marie Miller; and one grandson.

Surviving are two daughters, Dinah Grant and Nellie Smith, both of Cherokee; three sons, Will D., Edmund G. and R. Marty Catolster, all of Cherokee; eight grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Juanita Siller

Juanita Siller, 85, of Bryson City, died Sunday, Jan. 8, 2006.

Services will be held at a later date.

She was born Feb. 21, 1920, in Swain County, and was a bookkeeper for El Paso Restaurant in San Antonio, Texas, for 19 years before moving back to Bryson City in 1978. She was a daughter of the late Charlie and Laura Hensley.

She was also preceded in death by her husband, Matt Siller; two sisters, Dorothy Hatch and Lois Hensley; and one brother, Charles Hensley.

Surviving are three sisters, Clearsie Parris of Darrington, Wash., Clara Hartstrum of Hoquiam, Wash., and Geraldine Collins of Bryson City; and one brother, Walter Hensley of Whittier.

Moody Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.



George Crawford

George Alvin Crawford, 81, of Woodruff, S.C., died Sunday, Jan. 15, 2006, at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center after an extended illness.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 20, at Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church with the Revs. Pete Bove and Earl Holden officiating. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today (Thursday, Jan. 19) at Garrett Funeral Home. Burial will be in Crawford Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be his nephews.

He was born in Jackson County on Oct. 20, 1924. He was a resident of Valley Falls Terrace in Spartanburg, S.C., for the last three years. He was a son of the late Cicero and Myrtle Robinson Crawford.

He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Lloyd and Roy Crawford.

Surviving are two sons, Alvin Crawford of Woodruff and Calvin Crawford of Bessemer City; one daughter, Carolyn Donnels of Woodruff; three brothers, Earl Crawford of Asheville, Clyde Crawford of Kings Mountain and Carl Crawford of Woodruff; six sisters, Ethel Arrington of Waynesville, Harriet Woods of Hampton, Va., Evelyn Turpin of Asheville, Lena Caldwell of Black Mountain, Louise Sutton of Clyde and Katherine Chesney of Woodruff; two grandchildren; six stepgrandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and six stepgreat-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to the Blessed Hope Freewill Baptist Church, Cross Anchor Hwy., Woodruff, SC 29388.
