Western women lose pair of league games

The struggles for Western Carolina’s women’s basketball team continued as the Lady Cats (1-11, 1-2) dropped a pair of Southern Conference games during the past week.

Elon was an 85-72 winner on Jan . 2 at the Ramsey Center. Western fell 67-63 Saturday at Davidson.

Kitara McMoore poured in 31 points and pulled down 16 rebounds in Elon’s victory. Nicole Allison scored 20 points, and Robyn Shipley had 11.

Western was led by Lauren Powell with 18 points. She was joined in double digits by April Parker with 13 and Ashley Pellom and Monique Dawson with 10 apiece.

WCU led by nine points in the first half, but the Lady Phoenix finished strong. McMoore’s steal and layup at the buzzer tied it 33-33.

Elon took the lead for good early in the second half. The Lady Phoenix scored 52 points after intermission thanks to making 51.5 percent of their field goal tries.

Elon finished with 48.5 percent field goal shooting while holding the Lady Cats to 36.7 percent.

Parker’s 10 rebounds helped WCU to a 43-31 advantage on the boards.

Western committed 17 turnovers, and Elon had 14.

Completing the WCU scoring were Erin May with nine, Teshymia Tillman with eight, and Jessika Johnson and Chevon Keith with two apiece.

Saturday at Davidson, Janell Crayton scored 26 points helping the Lady Wildcats to the victory. Jessica Mitchell and Kelly Gassie both had 15.

Powell led Western with 18 points, Parker netted 16, and Dawson had 14.

WCU narrowed an eight-point deficit to one and had a chance to take the lead late in the game but came up short.

The Lady Wildcats had a 29-27 halftime lead.

Davidson shot 39.1 percent from the floor, just slightly better than WCU’s 38.9 percent.

Led by Parker’s 12 rebounds, Western had a 37-36 advantage on the boards. Crayton had eight rebounds to lead the Lady Wildcats.

The Lady Cats were hurt by 20 turnovers while Davidson had 15.

Rounding out the WCU scoring were Keith with seven, Tillman with four, Teyawna Hardy with two and May and Kendra Eaton with one each.
