Tuesday accident kills pedestrian

011206vehiculardeath
A Sylva man was killed Tuesday afternoon when he was struck by a dump truck in the parking lot of Tim’s Auto Parts on Business 23. Duane Scott Myers, 47, of Nicole Arms Road, was dead at the scene, according to Police Chief Jeff Jamison. The driver of the Jerry Cooper truck, 24-year-old James Ray Carter of Bryson City, was backing up in the lot attempting to park when the vehicle struck Myers, Jamison said. Myers had apparently just purchased a drink from a machine and was walking through the lot. The accident is still under investigation by Officer Tom Tenhagen and Detective John Buchanan. Gene Burleson, a motor carrier officer, was called to the scene to inspect the truck. Some minor violations were found, according to N.C. Highway patrol Sgt. J.S. Brooks. They included one tire below regulation tread depth, an exhaust leak and an expired driver’s medical card. – Herald photo by Nick Breedlove
