Suspect apprehended after Cherokee break-in
By Lynn Hotaling
Local law enforcement officers apprehended one suspect after a Saturday (Jan. 7) break-in at a Whittier home.
Jackson County Sheriff’s Office Deputies Jim Henry and Blake Watson responded to a breaking and entering in progress at Valerie Ferguson’s home on Old Mission Road, according to Lt. Shannon Queen of the Sheriff’s Office.
Officers with the Cherokee Police Department assisted with one of their canines to help track the suspect, who had fled into the woods after being briefly detained by Ferguson’s sons, Donald and Ray, who live nearby, Queen said.
Valerie Ferguson called her son Donald’s home initially, and the 6:50 p.m. call to law enforcement was made from Donald Ferguson’s residence, Queen said.
Officers obtained a detailed description of the suspect and the search continued. In a matter of minutes, Jackson County Dispatch received information that an out-of-breath man matching the description was standing on the side of U.S. 441 near Camp Creek Road, Queen said.
Watson apprehended the suspect, Lowney Yohnegale Crow of Cherokee, with assistance from Cherokee police officers.
Crow is charged with first- degree burglary and remains in the Jackson County jail under a $15,000 secured bond.
According to Queen, Valerie Ferguson is doing well after the incident and needed no treatment. She was not injured, but the experience of finding someone in her home was stressful for her, Queen said.
“This was a very serious event,” said Jackson County Sheriff Jimmy Ashe. “We take such things very seriously. Breaking and enterings of this sort are out of character for our community, but thankfully the suspect was apprehended quickly and is in custody.”
