Saturday wrecks send two people to Mission
By Carey Phillips
Two people were transported to Mission Hospitals in Asheville where they were treated and released following two automobile accidents Saturday.
The first wreck occurred around 12:10 p.m. at Caney Fork Road and N.C. 107. Ruth Ann Conley, 69, of Canton, was airlifted from the scene to Mission, where she was treated and released, according to a hospital spokesperson.
Conley was attempting to turn left from Caney Fork onto 107 South in a 1995 Ford passenger car when she pulled in front of a 2000 Ford pickup truck, being driven north on 107 by Steven Wayne Bumgarner, 28, of Bay Berry Cove Road, Sylva, according to N.C. Highway Patrol Sgt. Matt Wike.
The collision caused the driver’s side door to come off of Conley’s vehicle, and she fell out striking the pavement, Wike said.
State Trooper Derek Robinson charged Conley with failure to yield and a seat belt violation.
Bumgarner was not injured.
Another accident, which occurred on Cane Creek Road about 10:45 p.m., sent James Logan, 19, of Weaverville, to Mission. He also was treated and released, a hospital spokesman said.
Logan was a passenger in the bed of a 2002 Chevrolet pickup being driven north on Cane Creek by David Gerald Mathis, 20, of Waynesville, according to Wike. The wreck happened on a narrow section of roadway when the pickup went off the right side of the road and struck a tree, Wike said.
Mathis, along with Logan and four other passengers, drove to the Enmark station in Sylva before reporting the accident, Wike said.
Mathis and one of his passengers, Johnnie Smathers, 20, of Happy Ridge Lane, Sylva, were treated and released at Harris Regional Hospital, a hospital spokesman said.
The other three passengers – Leah McPhearson, 16, of Waynesville, Ashley Cole, 16, of Old Cullowhee Road, Sylva, and Mary Ann Kensey, 14, of Pine Creek Road, Cullowhee – did not require hospital treatment.
Trooper S.K. Bowers charged Mathis with reckless driving and driving while license revoked.
