Western administrator, professor Loughlin dies

011206malcolmloughlinMalcolm John Loughlin, 58, of Cullowhee, died Wednesday, Jan. 4, 2006, after a battle with cancer.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 21, in the recital hall of the Coulter Building at Western Carolina University.

He was born Jan. 22, 1947, in Wales, and graduated from Hartridge High School. He earned a bachelor’s degree form the University of Wales at Glamorgan and a master’s degree in educational administration from WCU. He taught in England, Jamaica, Scotland and the United States, and lived for a time in Aberdeen, Scotland, before coming to Western in 1977, where he held a number of teaching, coaching and administrative positions during his 28-year association with the university.

He began his teaching career in 1969 at Trevelyan Secondary School in Windsor, England. Next he taught in Jamaica, where he was chairman of the physical education department at Oberlin High School in Kingston, and a department head and head of the boarding house at DeCarteret College in Mandeville. He then served as controller of attendance, discipline and sports at the Belair School in Mandeville.

From 1979 to 1981, he coached Western’s NCAA Division I men’s soccer program, coached swimming, and worked with The Cullowhee Experience - Western’s summer enhancement program for gifted and talented students. He then spent five years in Scotland as director of athletics at the American School in Aberdeen, returning to WCU in the summers to serve as principal of The Cullowhee Experience. Returning to Western in 1986, he took over the directorship of The Cullowhee Experience and taught in the Department of Administration, Curriculum and Instruction. He also served as an adviser in WCU’s Counseling, Advisement and Placement Center. He joined the administrative staff of Western’s Division of Summer School and Continuing Education (now Distance and Continuing Education) in 1988. During his tenure there he served as associate director, interim dean, acting dean and associate dean.

Phi Beta Delta Honor Society for International Scholars granted him honorary membership in 2005. Western presented him with the Paul A. Reid Distinguished Service Award for administrative staff in 1997 and named him as a nominee for the Governor’s Award for Excellence. He was a member of Phi Delta Kappa Honor Society for educators. He served on the board of directors for the North Carolina Odyssey of the Mind, on the visiting committees for the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools in Santo Domingo, and was a founding member of the American International Sports Tournament. He participated in soccer, rugby and swimming, captaining teams and earning numerous medals and awards. He participated in the Welsh National Trampoline Championships, finishing third, and played on the Jamaican National Rugby team in the Caribbean Championships in Barbados in 1975.

He helped implement collaborative programs between Western and the University of Wales at Glamorgan, the University of Galway in Ireland and the nation of Jamaica. His association with Jamaica was particularly strong, and he was especially proud that Western has “literally trained thousands of Jamaican teachers.”

Last August at WCU’s commencement, the governor general of Jamaica and the U.S. Department of State honored Loughlin for his three decades of service in international education as a teacher, mentor and guide. On that occasion, Western Chancellor John Bardo called Loughlin “a positive voice in our community who cares about people and focuses on their needs. He has been the quintessential problem-solver for many individuals and groups, both on and off campus. His ability to engender cooperation from diverse offices and individuals to implement creative solutions to difficult programs is outstanding, And above all else, his enthusiasm and loyalty to Western is amazing.”

He was a son of Bill Loughlin and the late Frances Loughlin.

Surviving in addition to his father are his wife, Anne G. Loughlin; two daughters, Tara of Birmingham, Ala., and Katie of Cullowhee; one sister, Sue Malliet of Brussells, Belgium; and one brother Alan Loughlin of Cardiff, Wales.
