Neslen stays unbeaten at Cherokee tourney

Smoky Mountain’s George Neslen remained undefeated on the season as he went 9-0 in the 160-pound class during the Cherokee Wrestling Tournament held Dec. 29-30.

“Due to the holidays we had a smaller team than usual and only fielded seven wrestlers the first day and six the second,” Coach Chuck Beane said. “This made it virtually impossible to win as a team, but overall I was pleased with the effort of the kids that were there. In the spots where we fielded wrestlers, we had winning records against all but one of the nine teams in the tournament.”

In addition to Neslen, T.J. Bradley also had a very successful tournament as he went 8-1 at 215 pounds.

Records for other Mustangs by weight class included:

112, Cory Vickery, 6-3; 119, Mason Neff, 5-4; 130, Buddy Jarvis, 5-4; 135, John-Luke McCord, 2-2; and heavyweight, Michael Taylor, 2-7.

Records compiled by SM in contested matches against other teams in the tourney were:

Madison County (Ga.), 5-2; Cherokee, 5-2; Robbinsville, 5-2; Hayesville, 4-2; St. Pauls (La.), 1-5; South Forsyth (Ga.), 4-2; Swain, 4-2; Greeneville (Tenn.), 4-2; Mitchell, 4-2.
