Law enforcement kicks off Torch Run
 |
Officials, coaches and athletes gathered at the Courthouse steps Jan. 5 to kick off fund-raising efforts for this year’s Special Olympics. Officers and athletes are joining with local organizations to collect enough quarters to place back-to-back to make a mile, which will take $17,000 in change. According to Sylva Police Officer Jeff Postell, who with police clerk Amanda Parker is coordinating law enforcement’s efforts, the “Quarter Mile” program is only the first of many events to raise money for the games. Those on hand to mark the event were, from left, (front) Sylva Police Chief Jeff Jamison; Parker; Postell; Jackson County Sheriff Jimmy Ashe; athletes Jason Hedrick, Katie McGuire, Diane Bryant, Roy Bryant and Heather Quinn; (back) Sylva town Manager Jay Denton; Sylva Police Officers John Buchanan and Shannon Ashe; Thomas Tardo of Ryan’s; Mandy Haney of Bojangle’s; Brian Hoover of Ryan’s; coach Tammy Etters; and assistant coach Rachel Nicholson. – Herald photo by Nick Breedlove |
