Western’s women win in conference opener

Western Carolina’s women’s basketball team picked up its first win of the season Saturday in the Southern Conference opener at Wofford.

Lauren Powell scored 19 points for the Lady Cats (1-9) in the 79-54 victory. Ashley Pellom added 11, and Chevon Keith had 10.

Nakia Mister paced the Lady Terriers with 19 points, and Kelsi Koenig had 11.

Powell had half of the points in a 10-2 spurt as WCU took an 18-8 lead on Teshymia Tillman’s layup with 12:20 to play in the first half.

Western went up 36-18 after Powell’s three-pointer at the 2:43 mark and led 38-21 at intermission.

The Lady Cats turned the game into a blowout with a 20-2 run, capped by Monique Dawson’s layup, for a 62-28 lead with 9:19 to play.

WCU shot 46.6 percent from the floor while holding Wofford to 37.5 percent.

Pellom and April Parker both had seven rebounds helping Western to a 41-36 advantage on the boards. Mister led the Lady Terriers with seven.

The game was sloppy with the teams combing for 63 turnovers – 33 by Wofford and 30 by the Lady Cats.

Completing the WCU scoring were Parker with nine, Teyawna Hardy with eight, Tillman, Dawson and Jessika Johnson all with six, and Erin May with four.
