Long-range shots key Georgia past Western
Georgia hit 14 of 25 three-pointers Saturday en route to an 89-65 non-conference basketball victory over Western Carolina before 4,837 fans at Georgia’s Stegeman Coliseum.
Toney Channing scored 18 points for the Bulldogs. Mike Mercer followed with 17, and Levi Stukes had 15.
Western’s Corey Muirhead was the game’s top scorer (20) and rebounder (12). David Berghoefer finished with 13 points for the Catamounts (7-8).

Georgia hit five three-pointers, including two by Channing, during a 17-3 spurt for a 37-19 lead after Billy Humphrey’s three-pointer, with 6:03 to go in the half.
Muirhead scored seven as the Cats finished the half with an 11-2 run cutting the gap to 39-30.
Georgia controlled the entire second half with the biggest lead being 76-50 on Channing’s layup at the 6:33 mark.
The Bulldogs shot 52.4 percent from the floor, and WCU shot 50 percent.
WCU had a 32-29 rebounding edge.
The Cats were hurt by 25 turnovers while Georgia had 16.
Completing the WCU scoring were Jared Outing and Antonio Russell with nine apiece, Eric Wilson and Kyle Greathouse both with five and Trey Hopkins with four.
