The year in pictures

Jackson County’s 2005 included a number of festivals and events, from Greening Up the Mountains in April through Dillsboro’s holiday luminaire in December. New this year was a pottery festival, which premiered in Dillsboro in November. A well-known entertainer – Jay Leno – came to Cullowhee to open a new arts center. It was a year for appreciating mountain beauty, from sunlight on the Blue Ridge Parkway to a sunset over Main Street and from spring flowers to autumn leaves. Weather played a part as well, with a surprise spring snow derailing an April adventure race; a July heat wave; and Hurricane Katrina-related relief efforts and high gas prices dominating September’s front pages. Bank robber may be same man as in 2003 incident - The man who robbed SunTrust Bank on Dec. 20 is believed to be the same person who held up the bank (then known as Central Carolina) on Dec. 22, 2003. “The individual fits the description from the one two years ago,” Sylva Police Chief Jeff Jamison said. “The (method of operation) of the robberies were very similar in nature. 122905westermanlunztSearch continues for man wanted in Florida slaying - One man is in custody, and Jackson County authorities are searching for another wanted in connection with a murder in Florida. Last Thursday (Dec. 22), a warrant was issued for Christopher David Lunz, 38, on a charge of first-degree murder. The Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office in Largo, Fla., believes Lunz was involved with the murder of his estranged father, David James Lunz, which occurred in March of 2003. Christopher Lunz resided at 1406 Tunnel Mountain Rd., Sylva, with William Timothy Westerman, 25, who has been charged with first-degree murder in Pinellas....
