Ridenour reappointed as Sylva town attorney
By Justin Goble
Sylva officials voted unanimously to renew the contract of the town’s attorney.
Officials displayed confidence in Eric Ridenour by retaining him as the town’s legal advisor, a post he has held since 1998.
Discussion of the lawyer’s contract came up during the town board’s Dec. 15 meeting.
Board member Maurice Moody voiced support for Ridenour, saying that he has served admirably as the attorney and deserved another term.
“I’m satisfied with our current attorney,” Moody said. “I recommend we continue with Eric Ridenour as our attorney.”
According to town Manager Jay Denton, such appointments don’t have a time frame, though new boards usually vote on them at their first full meeting.
“The town usually makes reappointments at its organizational meeting, which is the first full meeting of the new board,” Denton said. “There’s really no expiration date. The town attorney and the town manager are the appointments the board makes, and they serve at the pleasure of the board. My appointment didn’t come up because I was just hired.”
In other business on Dec. 15, board member Harold Hensley was appointed as the town’s representative to the Fireman Relief Fund.
The fund, which is operated by the state fire marshal, serves as a form of insurance in case a fireman is injured while on call.
The town is required to appoint a representative to the fund. Former board member Anne Cabe served in that role before her October resignation.
