THANKS TO EVERYONE who entered photos in The Herald’s first-ever “A Child’s Christmas” photo contest. We received more than 25 photos, and we think the winners really brighten up this year’s holiday special section. Grand prize winner, pictured on page 1A, is Wes Stone of Cullowhee. Second place went to May Anne Roos of Sylva for a vintage shot of her and her brothers that dates back to 1947. Second place went to Carl and Annette Shelton of Cullowhee’s Speedwell community for a cute photo of their grandchildren, and third place was awarded to Jaclyn and Shay Davis of Sylva for their charming shot of their son, Gage, who will celebrate his first Christmas this year. The “most original” title went to Marcell Woodard of Sylva, who brought photos of herself with her children and her grandchildren, with the grandchildren decked out in the holiday outfits their parents had worn years before. Judges (Herald news staff) awarded honorable mentions to Tracy Kelly of Franklin, Kathy Watkins of Webster, Stephanie Wilson of Tuckasegee, Suzanne Stone of Cullowhee, Betty Reid of Sylva, Barbara Davis of Sylva, Rachel Frizzell of Sylva, Si Simmons of Webster, Don and Lisa Miller of Sylva and Diane Stillwell of Cullowhee.
AND SPEAKING OF OUR CHRISTMAS SECTION, please take time to look through it to find holiday greetings from local merchants who appreciate your business during the holidays and all year long.
ONE OF OUR READERS stopped by with information that could prevent fraud for some county residents. The scam is called “Euro Lotto,” and targeted individuals receive a check for $1,960 from “Apple & Eve LLC” in Port Washington, N.Y. An accompanying letter advises the recipient that they are a winner – in this case of $95,000 – and that the check is to pay taxes and fees. The person is instructed to deposit or cash the check, and to keep the award strictly confidential. Once the check is cashed, scam operators often are able to gain access to the “winner’s” bank account and withdraw assets at will. Readers are urged to be on the lookout for this and other mail and telephone fraud during the holiday season. Don’t cash checks you can’t verify, and never give out personal information like your social security or credit card number over the telephone.
WE HAVE AN UPDATE on the photo we published in this space last week. It was a picture of a 2 year old girl, and it was found at the Greens Creek staffed recycling center underneath a teapot. Written on the back of the picture are the words “Patricia Riley Haire, 1935-36? About 2 years old.” We asked anyone who knew anything about the photo to give us a call. It turns out we got information from two readers. First, we heard from Connie Haire, who believes the photo was of her husband’s (Rep. Phil Haire’s) sister-in-law, who was a Riley before she married. With that news, we mailed the picture off to Phil’s sister-in-law. Then we learned how the photo happened to be at the Greens Creek SRC. It seems that Gladys Pilch of Sylva found the picture at a thrift shop in Asheville. She thought the little girl was so cute that she bought the picture. However, she really didn’t have a use for it and didn’t know who it was, so she took it to the SRC, she said. |
