Russell scores 26 as Cats win SC opener

Antonio Russell scored 26 points Sunday leading Western Carolina to an 83-57 romp past Citadel.

A crowd of 487 saw the Southern Conference basketball opener at the Ramsey Center.

Eric Wilson added 15 points for the Catamounts (7-6). Corey Muirhead finished with 14, and Kyle Greathouse had 12.

Citadel Demetrius Nelson had 11 points.

WCU led throughout the game after Greathouse opened the scoring on a three-pointer with 19 seconds elapsed. It was one of 13 treys as the team shot a sizzling 65 percent from three-point range.

Muirhead had the first five points and Wilson the last three of an 8-0 run for a 22-12 advantage at the 9:32 mark.

The Cats closed the half on a 9-1 spurt, including Muirhead’s four-point play with three seconds left, to lead 41-21.

The margin never dipped below 20 after consecutive three-pointers by Greathouse and Wilson made it 47-23 with 17:57 on the clock.

The game’s biggest lead was 75-47 on a Greathouse trey at the 5:16 mark.

The Cats shot 52.3 from the floor while holding Citadel to 40.9 percent.

Led by Wilson and Jared Outing with seven apiece, WCU dominated rebounding 37-21. Nelson and J’Mel Everhart both had four rebounds for the Bulldogs.

Western turned the ball over 15 times, and Citadel committed 11 turnovers.

Completing the WCU scoring were Outing and David Berghoefer with five apiece and Trey Hopkins and Negus McKenna both with four.
