Jens Pedersen
Jens T. Pedersen, 91, died Friday, Dec. 9, 2005, in Pontiac, Mich.
Funeral services held Tuesday, Dec. 13, at St. Peter’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Plymouth, Mich.
He was born February 27, 1914, in Detroit, Mich. He was a resident of Sylva from 1973 to 2004 and was a member of Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church. He was involved in the Asheville Symphony and Asheville Symphony Choir.
He was preceded in death by one brother, Niels; and one sister, Stella.
Surviving are his wife, Edith; one son, Soren Pedersen; three grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Ernest Jamison
Ernest William Jamison Jr., 83, of Hillcrest Street, Sylva, died Thursday, Dec. 15, 2005, at V.A. Medical Center in Oteen after a brief illness.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Monday, Dec. 19, at East Sylva Baptist Church with the Revs. Charles Dean, Charles Stevens and Ernie Jamison officiating. Burial was in Fairview Memorial Gardens with military rites conducted by William E. Dillard American Legion Post 104 and the U.S. Army.
Pallbearers were his grandsons and family members.
A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, he was a salesman. He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served in World War II, and a member of East Sylva Baptist Church, where he was a choir member and former director. He was an avid golfer and bowler. He was a son of the late Ernest W. Sr. and Altha Beasley Jamison.
He was also preceded in death by his wife, Mary Ann Plemmons Jamison; two sisters, Georgia Buchanan and Dorothy Deitz; and one brother, Vernon Jamison.
Surviving are two daughters, Janice Wylock of Chicago and Shelia McLeod of Lenoir; two sons, Jeffery Jamison and the Rev. Ernie Jamison, both of Sylva; three sisters, Betty Fisher, Helen Jamison and Jean Jamison, all of Sylva; one brother, Harold Jamison of Sylva; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Edith Parris
Edith Holden Parris, 93, of Skyland Drive, Sylva, died Tuesday, Dec. 13, 2005, at Mountain View Manor Nursing Center.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Friday, Dec. 16, at Buff Creek Baptist Church with the Revs. Lloyd Fish and Gerald Morris officiating. Burial was in Hooper-Holden Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Doyle Holden, Robert Holden, Joe Holden, Eddie Holden, Jerry Allman and Dalton Stephenson.
A native of Jackson County where she lived most of her life, she was a co-owner of The Bargain Barn. She was a member of Buff Creek Baptist Church, where she worked in VBS and the tape ministry. She was a daughter of the late Mont and Zephyr Shelton Daves.
She was also preceded in death by her husbands, Robert D. Holden, Roy L. Jones and Dewitt Parris; one son, William D. Holden; four sisters, Lillie Smith, Vivian Parker, Billie Adams and Anna Lou Daves; one brother, Nathan Daves; and one grandson.
Surviving are two daughters, Collene H. Mills and Carol H. Pruett, both of Sylva; two sons, Frank Holden and Earl Holden, both of Sylva; 12 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

Dolly Rose
Mary C. “Dolly” Rose, 79, of Cherokee, died Wednesday, Dec. 14, 2005.
Memorial services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 17, at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church in Cherokee with Father Shawn O’Neil officiating. Interment was in Drama Cemetery.
She was a volunteer at Cherokee Elementary School and received the Governor’s Award for Outstanding Volunteer Service. She was a longtime member of Our Lady of Guadalupe Church and of the Foster Grandparents program. She was a daughter of the late Thomas Harpe and Mary Jacobs Harpe.
She was also preceded in death by her husband, Thurman Fisher Rose; and one infant son, Francis Rose.
Surviving is one sister, Johannah Bassett of Ohio.

Mary Phillips
Mary Phillips, 84, of Caney Fork Road, Cullowhee, died Saturday, Dec. 17, 2005, at her residence after a brief illness.
Graveside services were held at 2:30 p.m. Monday, Dec. 19, in Balsam Grove Cemetery with the Rev. Clifford Parker officiating.
A native of Swain County, she had lived in Jackson County for most of her life. She was a member of Balsam Grove Freewill Baptist Church. She was a daughter of the late Johnny and Emily Queen Brendle.
She was also preceded in death by her husband, Shurman Phillips who died in 1996; one son, General Brown Jr.; one daughter, Norma Jean Queen; and one brother, Lonnie Brendle.
Surviving are one daughter, Linda Shular of Cullowhee; two sons, Alden Dale Phillips of Stevenson, Ala., and Tim Shurman Phillips of the home; one brother, Huel Brendle of Warren, Mich.; three grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.

Dovevot Bradley
James Dovevot Bradley, 78, of Wilmot Road, Whittier, died unexpectedly Thursday, Dec. 15, 2005, at his residence.
Graveside services were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 20, in Fairview Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Johnny Ray Davis officiating.
He was born July 9, 1927, in Jackson County, where he lived most of his life. He was a sergeant in the U.S. Army, serving as a medic on the front line of the Korean War. He worked at Celeneese Corp. for 19 years. He was a son of the late James Thad and Bessie Sellers Bradley.
He was also preceded in death by two sisters, Irene Cairnes and Rene Ashe; and an infant brother.
Surviving are two daughters, Barbara Jean Pressley and Patricia Susan Helms, both of Monroe; two sons, Terry Layne Bradley of Monroe and James Michael Bradley of Dillsboro; two sisters, Betty Rose Oliveri and Pat Deason, both of Monroe; two brothers, Roy E. Bradley of Waynesville and Wayne Bradley of Greenville, S.C.; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Bennie Reese
Benjamin Charles “Bennie” Reese, 75, of Asheville, formerly of Sylva, died Monday, Dec. 19, 2005, at the St. Joseph Campus of Mission Hospitals in Asheville after a period of declining health.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Dec. 23, at Grace Baptist Church, Asheville, with the Rev. D.L. Wayne Adkisson officiating. The family will receive friends for an hour and a half before the service at the church. Entombment will be in Pisgah View Mausoleum.
A native of Macon County, he was a member of Grace Baptist Church, where he was a Sunday School teacher. He participated in Boy Scouts of America, and several other youth organizations. He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served during the Korean War. He started the Young Republicans Club at Western Carolina University and retired as a school teacher from the public school system. He also worked at the Billy Graham Training Center, The Cove. He was a son of the late Benjamin F. and Elinor Miller Reese.
Surviving are his wife of 37 years, Brenda Owen Reese; one daughter, Tara Reese of Asheville; one son, 2nd Lt. Benjamin O. Reese of Tyndall AFB Panama City, Fla.; and one granddaughter.

Marvin Rice
Marvin E. Rice, 76, of Heady Mountain Church Road, Cashiers, died Saturday, Dec. 17, 2005, at Highlands-Cashiers Hospital.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 20, at Heady Mountain Baptist Church with the Revs. Burlis Powell, Johnny Norris and Keith Ashe officiating. Burial was in Pleasant Grove Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Audre Franks, Charles Whitmire, Nathan McKinney, Mitchell Rice, Wayne Rice, Charles McKinney and Johnny McKinney.
A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, he was a self-employed caretaker. He was a member of Heady Mountain Baptist Church, where he was a deacon. He was a son of Barney Rice of Cashiers and the late Rosa Kelly Rice.
In addition to his mother, he was also preceded in death by two brothers, Ray and Ford Rice; and an infant sister.
Surviving in addition to his father are his wife of 51 years, Ann McKinney Rice; two sons, Danny Rice and Sammy Rice, both of Cashiers; two sisters, Dorthy Riddle of Cashiers and Ella Mae Franks of Sapphire; and three brothers, Freeman Rice of Franklin, Oliver Rice of Clayton, Ga., and Doyle Rice of Cashiers.

Ellen Reece
Ellen Reece, 79, of Allen Henson Circle, Sylva, died Sunday, Dec. 18, 2005, at her residence after a period of declining health.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 21, in the chapel of Melton-Riddle Funeral Home with the Revs. Eddie Stillwell, Scott Dotson and Burlis Powell officiating. Burial was in Sols Creek Cemetery.
She was a native of Jackson County, where she lived most of her life. She was a daughter of the late John Wesley and Olevie Alexander Reece.
She was also preceded in death by her husband, Fred Reece who died in 1979; three sons, Charles “Pete” Reece, Johnny Reece and Joe Reece; two sisters, Isabell Bonnie Buchanan and Flonnie Bates; and two grandchildren.
Surviving are two daughters, Della Mae Reece of Sylva and Lola Ledford of Clyde; two sisters, Deller Harris of Rosman and Mattie Hoxit of Tuckasegee; 10 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Gwin Allen
Gwin B. Allen, 71, of Jimmy Morris Road, Sylva, died Thursday, Dec. 15, 2005, at his residence after an extended illness.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 18, in the chapel of Melton-Riddle Funeral Home with the Rev. Tommy Ashe officiating. Burial was on Tuesday, Dec. 20, in Western Carolina State Veterans Cemetery in Black Mountain.
A native of Swain County, he had lived in Jackson County since 1989. He was a U.S. Army veteran and was retired from General Motors in the quality assurance department of the Cadillac division. He enjoyed gardening and attended Mt. Zion Baptist Church. He was a son of Olive Ledford Allen of Bryson City and the late Guy Thomas Allen.
Surviving in addition to his mother are his wife of 42 years, Martha Gable Allen; one daughter, Vicky Lynn Hawkins of Crossville, Tenn.; one son, Gwin “Burlin” Allen Jr. of Jefferson City, Tenn.; two brothers, Donald Edwin Allen of Maryville, Mich., and Kermit Dwitt Allen of Bryson City; and four grandchildren.

Doris Edwards
Dr. Doris Mary Edwards, 94, of Pressley Creek Road, Cullowhee, died Tuesday, Dec. 13, 2005, at Harris Regional Hospital after a brief illness.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 17, at Victory Baptist Church, of which she was a member, with the Rev. Benny Bagwell officiating. Burial was in Restlawn Memorial Park in Durham.
She was born in Jabalpur, India, and moved to the United States in the 1960s. She came to Jackson County to live with her son, Dr. John Edwards, in 1994.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Seth J. Edwards, who died in 1972.
Surviving are two daughters, Permala and Kamala; four sons, Seth, Rajendra, Dilawar and John; 10 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
