Western Carolina takes win over East Carolina
Western Carolina turned back East Carolina 56-48 in a non-conference basketball game Saturday before 4,796 fans at ECU’s Williams Arena.
Kyle Greathouse scored 12 points for the Catamounts (6-6), and Corey Muirhead had 10.
Taylor Gagnon, Corey Rouse and Sam Hinnant all had 10 points for the Pirates.
ECU led 8-4 on Hinnant’s three-pointer at the 16:40 mark.
After three ties, Muirhead hit a three-pointer with 8:11 on the clock giving WCU the lead for good at 18-15. It started a 12-2 run, capped by Stan Johnson’s trey, for a 27-17 advantage at the 5:05 mark.
Western led 30-25 at intermission.
The Pirates cut the gap to 39-36 after two foul shots by Japhet McNeil with 10:39 on the clock.
The Cats scored the next nine points, including five by Muirhead, pushing the margin to 48-36 at the 6:20 mark.
Courtney Captain’s layup brought ECU within 52-48 with 59 seconds to go, but Western hit enough free throws down the stretch to seal the win.
WCU shot 46.3 percent from the floor while holding the Pirates to 31.7 percent.
Rouse’s 11 rebounds helped ECU to a 35-27 advantage on the boards. Kyle Greathouse had five rebounds for Western.
The Pirates committed 17 turnovers, and the Cats had 15.
Completing the WCU scoring were David Berghoefer with nine, Johnson with eight, Antonio Russell with six, Eric Wilson with five, Jared Outing with four and Negus McKenna with two.
Western will return to action Sunday when it opens Southern Conference action at home with a 7 p.m. game against Citadel.
