121505teton
The majestic Teton Mountains along the Wyoming-Idaho border will be the backdrop for a Wilderness Education Association course to be offered next summer through Western Carolina University’s Division of Distance and Continuing Education. The Teton Steward Course will be held June 1-16 on the western slopes of the Tetons in Targee National Forest. The course is designed for individuals interested in careers in outdoor recreation or in working with mainstream youth programs such as the Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts or YMCA. Participants will learn about topics such as outdoor leadership, decision-making, problem-solving, basic camping skills, environmental ethics, navigation and wilderness emergency procedures. While not a “go until you drop” experience, but it is physically and mentally demanding, and the backpacking trip will include spring mountaineering techniques, including travel on snow. Participants will meet at Badger Creek Outdoor Center in Tetonia, Idaho. Transportation is not provided to Idaho. The cost, based on estimated summer school tuition that will be set later, is $1,973 for North Carolina residents and $2,233 for out-of-state residents. Academic credit is available. Deadline to register for the course is Jan. 20. For more information, contact Maurice Phipps at 227-3844 or e-mail Phipps@wcu.edu.
