WE RECEIVED MAIL this week from Rob Sutton of Sylva and Mike and Judy Cook of Cherokee. Both were thank-yous, which The Herald doesn’t run as Letters to the Editor, so we’re including them here.

First, from Sutton, a note about the nativity scene at Jackson Paper that is displayed each year at Christmas. Rob remembers that when Mead Corp. operated the plant, the nativity was also displayed. “I have lived in Sylva just about all of my life and that scene at Christmas has always been special to me. When Mead would place this scene outside each year, it was an exciting reminder to a little boy that Christmas would soon be here. Yes, I guess it was extra special for me because my dad (Bill Sutton) worked out of that corner office that was closest to the nativity. Anyway, I again just wanted to say ‘thank you’ to the folks at Mead, Jackson Paper and to Dad for sharing with our community a very special reminder that the birth of Jesus really is ‘the reason for the season,’” Rob writes.

The Cooks’ letter is prompted by Mike’s September accident. A Duke Power employee, Mike sustained electrical burns while restoring power in the Conleys Creek area. “We don’t know how we will ever be able to say ‘thank you’ enough. We know that there have been things done for us that we may never know about or even who did them. So, to everyone who made a donation, placed a phone call, provided food, traveled to the Burn Center in Augusta, Ga., sent a card, came to visit or said a prayer, thank you,” say Mike and Judy. The Cooks send special thanks to Mike’s co-workers at Duke, the faculty and staff at Smokey Mountain Elementary School, Qualla Fire Department, Swain County EMS and Cherokee Tribal EMS.
