Radford, Auburn keep WCU’s women winless

Western Carolina’s women’s basketball team is still looking for its first victory after a 76-74 home loss Friday to Radford.

The Lady Cats (0-7) battled back from a 14-point deficit in the second half but came up just short.

Sarah Stephens scored 18 points for the Lady Highlanders. Shavon Earp and Johnette Walker both added 15.

Chevon Keith paced WCU with 16 points, and Lauren Powell finished with 10.

Walker’s seven points keyed a 15-2 spurt giving Radford a 67-53 lead with 7:41 to play.

Jessika Johnson capped a 9-2 run cutting the gap to 71-69 with 1:26 on the clock.

April Parker’s jumper brought the Lady Cats within 76-74 with 13 seconds left.

Following a turnover, WCU missed two shots that would have tied the game.

Radford led most of the first half and was up 38-31 at intermission.

The Lady Highlanders shot 42.9 percent from the floor and held WCU to 37.7 percent.

Keith’s 14 rebounds helped Western to a 46-41 edge on the boards. Stephens led Radford with eight rebounds.

Radford had 17 turnovers to 16 by the Lady Cats.

Completing the WCU scoring were Parker and Johnson with nine apiece, Erin May and Teshymia Tillman both with seven, Monique Dawson with six, Amelia Miller and Lynsie Lamitie with three apiece, and Ashley Pellom and Teyawna Hardy each with two.

Auburn rolled past the Lady Cats 78-49 on Dec. 7 at Auburn.

DeWanna Bonner and Whitney Boddie both scored 16 points for the Lady Tigers while Nitasha Brown and Alexis Ogubie each had 10.

Dawson led WCU with 14 points.

The Lady Cats, who trailed 38-24 at halftime, shot a miserable 20.3 percent from the floor, including just 16.2 percent after intermission.

At the other extreme, Auburn shot 55.6 percent from the floor, including 60.9 percent in the second half.

Led by Marita Payne with nine, Auburn had a 45-42 rebounding edge. Keith had nine rebounds for the Lady Cats.

The Lady Tigers turned the ball over 20 times, and Western had 16 miscues.

Rounding out the WCU scoring were Miller with nine, Keith with seven, Powell with six, Parker with five, Lamitie with four, Tillman with two, and Johnson and Pellom with one apiece.
