Obituary Information

The Sylva Herald prints obituaries free of charge as a service to its readers.

When possible, obituaries should be submitted to The Herald from the funeral home in charge of arrangements. Information received will be printed in our standard obituary format. As is the case with all information submitted to The Herald, we reserve the right to edit obituary information to fit our standard format.

We publish names of the deceased's children; we also include the number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren. We do not include in-laws, cousins, nieces and nephews or special friends.

Included in a brief history of the deceased is items such as their employment, professional, civic, community and religious affiliations. We omit personal tributes.

To publish a more detailed obituary or one in another format, the announcement can run as a paid advertisement.

Diane Fennell

Diane Fennell, 70, of Cullowhee, died Tuesday, Dec. 6, 2005, at Mission Hospitals in Asheville.

Memorial services were held at 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 9, at St. David’s Episcopal Church, of which she was a member, with the Revs. Michael Hudson and Alice Mason officiating.

She owned Kudzu Bookkeeping and Taxes Inc., and enjoyed gardening. She was a daughter of the late Harold Fennell and Martha E. Genter Fennell.

She was also preceded in death by one brother, William Fennell.

Surviving are her husband, John Overbey; two sons, Kevin Overbey of Las Vegas, Nev., and Carl Overbey of Mooresville; two daughter, Cynthia Tennant of Sylva and Jennifer Wood of Knoxville, Tenn.; and eight grandchildren.

Moody Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.



Carl Coward

Carl Henry Coward, 81, of Granite Falls, Wash., died Saturday, Dec. 3, 2005.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 7, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. A private burial will be held in Marysville Cemetery.

He was born Sept. 22, 1924, in McAdenville, but later moved to Sylva, where he lived until he moved to the Northwest in 1943. He worked for Scott Paper as a logger for 21 years and enjoyed the outdoors, horses, hunting, fishing and camping. He was a son of the late James and Lilly Moore Coward.

He was also preceded in death by four sisters, Martha, Mary, Ellamay and Mona; and five brothers, Buster, Ray, David, R.B. and Verlon.

Surviving are his wife of 42 years, Sandra; six daughters, Vicki Coward, Lynn Sass, Debbie Hervel, Sherry Boober, JoAnn Lapham and Carolyn Coward; two sons, Thomas Coward and Peter Coward; one brother, Russell Coward; two sisters, Margaret Coggins and JoAnn Roberts; 12 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Purdy & Walters with Cassidy Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.



Fred Cabe

Fred Cabe, 99, of Sylva, died Wednesday, Dec. 7, 2005.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Friday, Dec. 9, in the chapel of Moody Funeral Home with the Revs. Dan Stiles and Loy Kennedy officiating.

Pallbearers were Russell Dalrymple, Matthew Cabe, Dustin Cabe, Brandon Cabe, Alan Cabe and Darren Sanders.

He was an avid fox hunter and a son of the late James Coleman Cabe and Eleanor Barron Cabe.

He was also preceded in death by two sons, Paul and Ray Cabe; one sister, Maryetta Buchanan; and four brothers, Ed, Frank, Robert and Amos Cabe; and one grandson.

Surviving are his wife of 72 years, Bessie Cochran Cabe; one son, Clemand Cabe of Sylva; five grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Moody Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.



William Merritt

William Junior Merritt, 54, of Bryson City, died Monday, Dec. 12, 2005, at his residence.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today (Thursday, Dec. 15) in the chapel of Crisp Funeral Home with the Rev. Eddie Trull officiating. The family will receive friends for one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Burial will be in Sawmill Hill Cemetery.

A native of Swain County, he was the son of Norma Wiggins Merritt of Sylva and the late William Levi Merritt.

Surviving in addition to his mother are two sisters, Linda Brooks of Sylva and Wanda Ann Merritt of Surfside Beach, S.C.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Holly Springs Baptist Church Building Fund, 366 Holly Springs Church Rd., Franklin, NC 28734.



Joyce Boone

Joyce Aloria Buchanan Boone, 52, of Lexington, died Sunday, Dec. 4, 2005, at her home after a sudden illness.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 7, in the chapel of Piedmont Funeral Home with the Rev. Clyde Akers officiating. Burial was in Forest Hill Memorial Park.

She was born Dec. 14, 1952, in Jackson County and was a former employee of Parkdale Mills. She was a daughter of Memphis Manuel Buchanan and Mary Ellen Cowan Buchanan.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Lee Boone; and one brother, Herman Buchanan.

Surviving are two sons, Chris Boone and Michael Boone, both of Lexington; one daughter, Loria Darr of Lexington; two sisters, Bessie Stroud of Lexington and Anna Lou Wiggins of Gastonia; four brothers, Kenneth Buchanan of Linwood, Manuel Buchanan of Sylva, and Jesse Buchanan and Carl Buchanan, both of Lexington; four grandchildren; and four stepgrandchildren.



James Maney

James “Derry” Maney, 48, of Waynesville, died unexpectedly Friday, Dec. 9, 2005.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 13, in the chapel of Melton-Riddle Funeral Home with the Rev. Phillip Wyatt officiating. Burial was in Green Hill Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Tim Lindsey, Timothy Lindsey, Henson Littlejohn, Terry Turner and Rodney Lowe.

He was born in Swain County, but lived in Haywood County for most of his life. He was formerly employed by the Town of Waynesville and was an electrician. He enjoyed fishing and working on computers. He was a son of Joann Turner Burnette of Waynesville and George D. Maney of Leicester.

He was preceded in death by maternal grandparents, James and Iva Jo Turner; and paternal grandparents, Frank Maney and Maude Hamilton.

Surviving in addition to his parents are one daughter, Angela Maney of Sylva; one brother, Robbie Burnette of Waynesville; and one granddaughter.



Deloise Burch

Deloise Ann Middleton Burch, 60, of White Oaks Drive, Sylva, died Thursday, Dec. 8, 2005, at Mission Hospitals in Asheville after a brief illness.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 11, in the chapel of Melton-Riddle Funeral Home with the Revs. Jim Ed Powell, David Burch and Joe Burch officiating. Burial was in Burch Cemetery.

Pallbearers were her grandchildren, Ernest Franks, Harvey Bumgarner, Josh Cook, Leeann Franks, Kayla Franks and Amanda Franks.

A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, she was an avid reader and made jelly. She worked in the housekeeping department at Western Carolina University and was a member of Cedar Baptist Church. She was a daughter of the late Robert and Lucy Watson Middleton.

She was also preceded in death by her husband, Lyda Burch, who died in 2004.

Surviving are three daughters, Annetta B. Mull of Cullowhee, Teresa Elliott of Georgetown, S.C., and Revonda Corbin of New Bern; two sisters, Robinette Crawford and Edria Heffner, both of Tuckasegee; two brothers, Duane and Alden Middleton, both of Tuckasegee; 10 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Charles Rogers

Charles F. Rogers Sr., 74, of Cherokee’s Goose Creek community, died Thursday, Dec. 8, 2005, at his residence.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 11, in the chapel of Crisp Funeral Home with the Rev. Glen Rogers officiating. Burial was in Yellowhill Veterans Cemetery with military graveside services conducted by Steve Youngdeer American Legion Post 143.

A native of Cherokee and longtime resident of Florida, he had lived in Cherokee for the last 15 years. He retired as an electronic technician with RCA and was a veteran of the U.S. Coast Guard. He was a son of the late Oscar and Edna Warren Rogers.

He was also preceded in death by one brother, Clarence “Ting” Rogers; and one sister, Alice Lawanna.

Surviving are one son, Charles Rogers Jr. of Fernandina Beach, Fla.; one daughter, Karen Richardson of Fernandina Beach; one brother, Harold C. Rogers of St. Marys, Ga.; and four sisters, Elsie Kimsey of Whittier, and Shirley Arch, Ruth Garrett and Lois Parrish, all of Cherokee; and four grandchildren.



Inez Wachob

Inez Potts Wachob, 92, of Cullowhee, died Saturday, Dec. 10, 2005, at Harris Regional Hospital.

Memorial services were held at 11 a.m. Monday, Dec. 12, at Cullowhee United Methodist Church with the Rev. David Reeves officiating.

She was a member of Cullowhee United Methodist Church and a teacher for more than 30 years in several local schools. She was a charter member for more than 50 years of Eastern Star East LaPorte Chapter 206, where she was a past matron and a past district deputy grand matron. She was a daughter of the late James C. Potts and Florence Hooper Potts.

She was also preceded in death by her husband, Guy Wachob; and two brothers, Roy and Davis Potts.

Surviving are one son, Bruce Wachob of Christiansburg, Va.; one sister, Blanche Wike of Cullowhee; and one grandson.

Memorials may be made to North Carolina Eastern Star Foundation, P.O. Box 289, Midland, NC 28107.

Moody Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
