DeGraffenreid has triple-double in win

Cetera DeGraffenreid turned in a triple-double with 26 points, 14 steals and 10 rebounds as Smoky Mountain crushed Swain 69-33 in a non-conference basketball game Saturday at the SM gym.

Ashley Robinson scored 11 points and pulled down 11 rebounds for the Lady Mustangs (4-0).

Swain’s Kirsten Cook and Stephanie Wood both had nine points.

“It was our first time playing on back-to-back nights this year, and we were coming off a big game against Franklin the night before,” Coach Cindi Simmons said. “I was pleased with how we came out and performed.”

Tasha Junaluska’s three-pointer gave SM the lead for good, 13-10, with 43 seconds to play in the opening period.

DeGraffenreid hit a 30-footer at the buzzer for a 16-12 advantage at the quarter break.

Swain nearly went scoreless in the second stanza before finally hitting a basket with 27 seconds left.

Meanwhile, the Lady Mustangs were scoring 19 straight points, including six by DeGraffenreid. Ashley Coggins’ 16-footer capped the spurt for a 35-12 lead with 53 seconds on the clock.

SM reeled off the third quarter’s final 10 points, including seven by DeGraffenreid, for a 53-24 margin. For the second time in the game, she nailed a three-pointer as time expired.

Jenna Carpenter and Sky Kanott both hit a pair of three-pointers in the fourth period. The biggest lead was 69-32 at the 1:49 mark.

“Cetera’s defense disrupted everything Swain tried to do offensively,” Simmons said. “Ashley Robinson also played well.”

DeGraffenreid made 10 field goals, including two three-pointers, and was four of four at the foul line. Robinson hit four field goals and three of three free throws.

DeGraffenreid and Robinson shared a combined Hammer Award for the Franklin and Swain games. The honor is given for hustle stats, including deflections, loose balls and charges.

Kanott finished with nine points, Carpenter and Tasha Junaluska both netted six, Kelli Woodard added four, Amy Haggard scored three, and Coggins and Laury Brown both had two.

The Lady Mustang JVs improved to 3-0 with a 48-39 win as Kayla Cooper scored 17 points. SM led at quarter breaks by scores of 7-2, 17-16 and 31-22.

“Kayla Cooper stepped up big offensively,” Coach Ollin Dunford said. “Our defense was totally awesome.”

He singled out Brittany Gilbert for her defense.

“She made a lot of things happen out there,” he said.
