The Coffee Shop on West Main Street is Sylva’s oldest restaurant. The business was established in 1926 by Rolle Painter and his daughter, Mayme Bailey. The current building was constructed in 1955 (top photo) after the original structure was torn down. The sign on the right indicates the building was air conditioned, a rarity in Sylva at that time. Curb service was offered in those days as shown by the sign on the left. Other owners through the years have included Cicero Bryson and Bill Collins. Gary Gibson bought the business from Collins in 1986 and has gradually remodeled the building through the years (bottom photo). The most recent renovations took place about three years ago. – Herald file photo (top) and Herald photo by Nick Breedlove
