SM wrestling team splits pair of opening matches
Smoky Mountain’s wrestling team opened its season Nov. 22 at Robbinsville against Andrews and Robbinsville.
Coach Chuck Beane did not have the score of the Andrews contest, but the Mustangs won. Most weight classes resulted in forfeits as there were only three contested matches.
The Mustangs won two of those. George Neslen pinned his opponent at 171 pounds, and John-Luke McCord won by decision at 135.
Robbinsville came out on top 51-27. Results by weight class were as follows:
103 – Joe Moore (S) decisioned John Shook 9-7.
112 – Caldwell (R) pinned Cory Vickery.
119 – Weston Haney (R) pinned Mason Neff.
125 – Chris Martin (R) won by forfeit.
130 – Joey Cox (S) pinned Cody Guffey.
135 – William Snyder (R) pinned McCord.
140 – Phillip Thomas (R) decisioned Joey Mallin 10-6.
145 – Jason Crisp (R) won by forfeit.
152 – Joseph Whittle (R) pinned Chad Harper.
160 – Neslen (S) pinned Jerrod Orr.
171 – Cody Carpenter (R) won by forfeit.
189 – Roscoe Woodard (S) won by forfeit.
215 – T.J. Bradley (S) won by forfeit.
Heavyweight – Chandler Turpin (R) pinned Michael Taylor.
The Mustangs got a late start to practice as Beane was not named coach until well after the Oct. 31 start of practice for winter sports.
“It was the first time I got to see a lot of them wrestle,” he said. “Robbinsville is a quality opponent. I’m cautiously optimistic. The young guys acquitted themselves well. They’ve just got to get some experience.”
