SM’s swim teams place second in season-opening meet at West
Smoky Mountain’s men’s and women’s swim teams finished second in their season-opening meets hosted by West Henderson on Nov. 22.
The women’s meet saw West compile 147 points to SM’s 79 and Owen’s 48. The West men had 101 points to 44 by SM and Owen’s 41.
The results of the meet were very favorable, according to Coach Bill Bowers. That was especially true considering five swimmers were not available due to illness and prior commitments.
Several swimmers met state qualifying and state consideration times. With SM dropping to 2-A, there will be no regional competition this year as those qualifying will compete in the State 1-A/2-A Meet on Feb. 4 at N.C. State in Raleigh.
Taylor Rodes, a new swimmer for the Mustang men, was singled out for filling a hole in the 200 medley relay. He swam the backstroke competitively for the first time and joined Whitfield Anderson, Mark Miller and Josh Young to win the event in 2:26.39. They were third in the 200 free relay (2:09.91).
Miller and Megan Owens met state qualifying times in individual events. Owens qualified by winning the 200 freestyle in 2:12.08 and the 500 free in 6:01.3. Miller placed second in the 100 butterfly in 1:09.53.
Anderson made state consideration times by winning the 100 breaststroke in 1:25.19 and placing second in the 100 back (1:17.09).
Annelise won the 100 back with a state consideration time of 1:21.63.
Kaitlyn Kluge also reached state consideration level by placing second in the 100 breast (1:29.92).
The women’s 200 medley relay team of Katie Hayes, Kluge, Nikki Lookabill and Owens was second in 2:24.69. That same group was second in the 400 free relay in 4:55.35. Both are state consideration times.
The 200 free relay team of Natalie Woodard, Kelly Moore, Davis and Rachel Graning was third with a state consideration time of 2:14.68. They were fifth in the 200 medley relay (2:40.5).
Others placing for the women include:
Kluge, fourth, 200 free, 2:42.51; second, 100 breast, 1:29.92.
