Holiday fire destroys barn
By Carey Phillips
Firefighters from four departments responded to a blaze that destroyed a barn on Johns Creek early Thanksgiving morning.
The barn was owned by Steven Ross, who was converting the structure into a residence, Fire Marshall Todd Dillard said. Ross lives nearby, according to Dillard, but no one had moved into the building that burnt.
The cause is unknown, but it is not considered suspicious, Dillard said.
Three vehicles, including two cars and a van, also were destroyed, according to Dillard. The N.C. Forest Service was called after the woods caught fire and burnt around an eighth of an acre.
The fire was reported around 3:15 a.m. by a neighbor who got up and saw flames, Cullowhee Fire Chief Richard Frady said.
“The house was fully involved and had fallen in when we got there,” Frady said.
Providing mutual aid for Cullowhee were departments from Sylva, Canada and Savannah. Firefighters were on the scene around three hours.
