BALSAM-WILLETS-OCHRE HILL FIRE DEPARTMENT will hold its second annual Christmas Bazaar and Silent Auction this Friday through Sunday, Nov. 25-27. The event will include photos with Santa on Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. and fingerprinting by the Sheriff’s Office on Friday from 3 to 6 p.m. Available for sale will be live Christmas trees, fresh wreaths, crafts and baked goods. Hours are 7 a.m.-9 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 2-5 p.m. on Sunday.

SYLVA LIONS CLUB PRESIDENT TOM STOVALL sent a note to tell us the Sylva Lions Club regrets the fact that U.S. flags weren’t displayed on Main Street for Veterans Day. “Extenuating circumstances prevented the regular display, and we apologize to all our contributors,” Stovall said.


THE USED BOOKSTORE on Main Street, operated by the Friends of the Library, will celebrate the kickoff of the Christmas season by staying open until 8 p.m. the evening of the Sylva Christmas Parade, Tuesday, Nov. 29. Pic & Play Dulcimer Group will perform. “Stop by, enjoy the music and browse through our constantly changing selection of used books,” a Friends spokesman said.


A BENEFIT FOR BOBBY GUNTER will be held Saturday, Nov. 26, from 6 until 9 p.m. at Webster Baptist Church. The event wil include a cakewalk, auction, raffle and hot dog dinner. For more information, call 586-6508.


LIL’ HARVEY’S AND THE JACKSON COUNTY CHAMBER OF COMMERCE are sponsoring a gingerbread house competition. Lil’ Harvey’s will offer gingerbread house classes Monday-Wednesday, Nov. 28-30, with participants eligible to enter their creations in the contest. Entries will be displayed at the Hooper House from Thursday, Dec. 1, through Friday, Dec. 9. Competition will be held in three age groups: youth, teen and adult. One winner will be chosen from each group, and each winner will receive a blue ribbon, holiday gift basket from Lil’ Harvey’s and media recognition. The three winning gingerbread houses then be displayed Friday and Saturday, Dec. 9-10, at Nancy Tut’s Christmas Shop during the second weekend of Dillsboro’s annual Luminaire. Cost for classes at Lil’ Harvey’s is $50 per person and includes supplies to make the houses. Contestants under the age of 17 must have adult supervision in baking the houses. CHEROKEE BOTTLED WATER has announced the addition of a new 8-ounce package in response to growing demand for the award-winning water. D.O.V.E. GALLERY plans to open a cafe that will serve food and beverages from 7:30 p.m. until midnight Tuesdays through Saturdays.


TOM CRAWFORD of Coward, Hicks and Siler was one of eight speakers at a recent Wake Forest University seminar titled “Representing the Elderly,” held in Raleigh. Crawford, an estate planning and elder law attorney, spoke on the topic “Practical Estate Planning for the Older Client, Including the Right to Die.” A native of Franklin, Crawford attended Davidson College and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He practiced for more than 25 years in eastern North Carolina before joining Coward, Hicks and Siler five years ago.


CONGRATULATIONS to Bobbie Broom of Sylva. Broom won a $25.00 Wal-Mart gift card in a raffle held at LifeWay Community Church’s Community Harvest Carnival on Saturday, October 29th. Broom was selected from over 235 entrants.


IT IS WINTER, which means cold, brutal weather for all of our citizens, including our migrant neighbors. Vecinos, a farmworker health program is accepting donations of gently used or new blankets and warm men’s coats (new or used) to distribute to migrant workers in our community. HOWARD ALLMAN AND THE STAFF OF NATIONWIDE INSURANCE recently moved their office from Main Street near the Courthouse to 715 W. Main St., the former Community First Mortgage location. Chamber of Commerce ambassadors were on hand for the official ribbon-cutting that marked the opening of Nationwide’s new quarters.
