Then and now
Citizens Bank and Trust Co. (top photo) opened in February 1963 with Jennings Bryson as manager and held an open house to celebrate on Feb. 16 of that year. The Andrews-based Citizens was headed by Percy Ferebee and was the first outside bank to open in Jackson County to challenge First Union, which had been the Jackson County Bank. Citizens merged with Wachovia Bank and Trust of Winston-Salem in 1970, and the bank on the corner of Main and Schulman streets became a branch of Wachovia. Despite a buy-out by First Union several years ago, the bank continues to operate under the Wachovia name. Through the years, the building has undergone extensive renovations, including the addition of second-floor office space. – Herald file photo (top) and Herald photo by Nick Breedlove |
