Obituary Information

The Sylva Herald prints obituaries free of charge as a service to its readers.

When possible, obituaries should be submitted to The Herald from the funeral home in charge of arrangements. Information received will be printed in our standard obituary format. As is the case with all information submitted to The Herald, we reserve the right to edit obituary information to fit our standard format.

We publish names of the deceased's children; we also include the number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren. We do not include in-laws, cousins, nieces and nephews or special friends.

Included in a brief history of the deceased is items such as their employment, professional, civic, community and religious affiliations. We omit personal tributes.

To publish a more detailed obituary or one in another format, the announcement can run as a paid advertisement.

Clarence Wike

112405wikeClarence Edman Wike, 71, of Franklin, died Tuesday, Nov. 15, 2005, at his residence.

 Memorial services were held at 2 p.m. Friday, Nov. 18, in the chapel of Bryant Funeral Home with Ed Sharp officiating.

A native of Jackson County, he was a U.S. Army veteran. He was retired from the Cherokee Historical Association, where he managed the Oconaluftee Indian Village, and was a member of Bryson City First United Methodist Church. He was a son of the late Homer and Jessie Snelson Wike.

Surviving are his wife of 50 years, Barbara Taylor Wike; four daughters, Deborah Richmond of Delta, Colo., and Pamela Munoz, Cheryl Plemmons and Anna Shields, all of Franklin; six brothers, Homer Howard Wike of Asheville, James Wike of Oak Ridge, Tenn., David Wike of Atlanta, and Orville Wike, Bruce Wike and Alva Wike all of Cullowhee; and six grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Franklin High School Booster Club, 100 Panther Drive, Franklin, NC 28734.

Samuel Wike

112405samuelwikeSamuel W. Wike, 97, of Whittier, died Monday, Nov. 14, 2005.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 16, at Whittier Missionary Baptist Church, which he attended, with the Revs. Clifford Willis and Ray Fox officiating. Burial was in Swain Memorial Park.

Pallbearers were his grandsons.

A lifelong resident of Swain County, he was a farmer, timberman, and TVA and WPA employee.

Surviving are his wife of 75 years, Marie Davis Wike; three daughters, Reva Chamberlin of Chattanooga, Tenn., Betty Brintnall of Sylva and Margie Gibson of Bryson City; four sons, Hoover and Cormal Wike of Whittier, Daniel Wike of Bryson City and William Wike of Brevard; 18 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

Crisp Funeral Home of Bryson City was in charge of arrangements.



Jeffrey Owle

Jeffrey Baron Owle, 44, of York, S.C., formerly of Cherokee, died Sunday, Nov. 13, 2005, in York.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 17, at Bethabara Baptist Church with the Revs. Charles Ray Ball and Mitchell Smiley officiating. Burial was in Birdtown Cemetery.

A native of Swain County, he was a son of Evanell Frady Owle of York and Mac Owle of Cherokee.

Surviving in addition to his parents are two sons, Brandon Lee Owle of Rock Hill, S.C., and Charles D. Owle of Lexington; one brother, Keith Owle of York; and four grandchildren.

Crisp Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.



Wesley Powell

Wesley Powell, 65, of Cherokee, died Saturday, Nov. 19, 2005, at his residence.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Monday, Nov. 21, at Macedonia Baptist Church, of which he was a member, with the Revs. Bo Parris, Jonathan Revis and Wayne Carson officiating. Burial was in Powell Family Cemetery with military rites conducted by American Legion Steve Youngdeer Post 143.

Pallbearers were Bo Taylor, Gil Jackson, Barney Youngdeer, Andy Arch, Joseph Toinetta, Dexter Smith, Terrance Littlejohn and Fuzz Cucumber.

A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, he worked for White Shield/Barclay for 23 years. He taught the Cherokee language at Smokey Mountain Elementary School and at the American Legion. He did work for the Cherokee Indian Museum. He was a U.S. Army National Guard veteran, serving seven years in Vietnam, and a member of American Legion Steve Youngdeer Post 143. He was a son of the late Benjamin “Possum” Powell and Marjorie Wallace.

He was also preceded in death by a wife, Annie Queen Powell.

Surviving are his wife of six years, Anna Powell; one son, Adam Powell, of the home; one daughter, Doris Arch of Cherokee; one sister, Dorothy Powell Swimmer of Cherokee; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Melton-Riddle Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.



Robert Thomason

Robert Thomason, 48, of Bethlehem, Ga., died Wednesday, Nov. 16, 2005, while visiting North Carolina.

Memorial services will be held at a later date in Georgia.

Moody Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.



Roy Crawford

Roy Ernest Crawford, 68, of Waynesville, died Monday, Nov. 14, 2005, at Mission Hospitals in Asheville.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Friday, Nov. 18, in the chapel of Garrett Funeral Home with the Revs. Bill Higgins and Daryl Hannah officiating. Burial was in Crawford Family Cemetery.

He was born in Jackson County on Nov. 26, 1936, and worked as an upholsterer for many years. He enjoyed ministering with music, including playing bluegrass and gospel music on his guitar. He was a member, deacon and Sunday school teacher of Sunrise Baptist Church in Asheville. He was a son of the late Cicero and Myrtle Robinson Crawford.

He was also preceded in death by one brother, Lloyd Crawford.

Surviving are his wife, Hazel Mills Crawford; two sons, Marvin Crawford of Cruso and Melvin Crawford of Lakeland, Fla.; two daughters, Trudy Hutchison of Candler and Angela Smith of Waynesville; four brothers, Earl Crawford of Fairview, Clyde Crawford of Kings Mountain, and Alvin Crawford and Carl Crawford, both of Woodruff, S.C.; six sisters, Ethel Arrington of Waynesville, Harriet Woods of Roanoke, Va., Evelyn Turpin of Asheville, Lena Caldwell of Black Mountain, Louise Sutton of Clyde and Katherine Chesney of South Carolina; eight grandchildren; eight stepgrandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and 18 stepgreat-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Sunrise Baptist Church in Asheville.

Carole Lassiter

Carole June Sullivan Lassiter, 73, of Sylva, died Sunday, Nov. 20, 2005, at Harris Regional Hospital after a lengthy illness.

A private memorial service will be held at a later date.

She was born Jan. 11, 1932, in Miami, Fla., and her father was the sheriff of Dade County in the 1940s. She attended University of Miami, University of Florida and American University, and was nominated a princess in the Miami Orange Bowl Parade in the early 1950s. She moved to Sylva in 1982 from Jacksonville, Fla. She was a daughter of the late James A. and Ethel Sullivan.

Surviving are her husband, Harold McGuire; one sister, Dorothy May Sullivan Lang; four sons, Thomas L. Dent Jr., J. Gregory Dent, David R. Dent and Douglas F. Dent; and five grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to the United Way.

Ed Allen

Paul Edward “Ed” Allen, 71, of Sylva’s Dillardtown community, died Thursday, Nov. 17, 2005, at Harris Regional Hospital.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 19, in the chapel of Melton-Riddle Funeral Home with the Rev. Charles Dean officiating. Burial was in Greens Creek Cemetery with military rites conducted by William E. Dillard American Legion Post 104.

A native of Macon County, he had lived most of his life in Jackson County. He retired from the Town of Sylva as a police officer and was a U.S. Army veteran. He attended East Sylva Baptist Church and was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed fishing and deer hunting. He was a son of the late Scott and Eva Buchanan Allen.

He was also preceded in death by one brother, Jimmy Allen.

Surviving are his wife, Blanche Mathis Allen; two daughters, Paula Henderson of Canton and Angie Sutton of Sylva; two stepdaughters, Debbie Harris and Judy Matthews, both of Sylva; one son, Eddie Lee Allen of Lexington; one stepson, David Michael Harris of Sylva; two sisters, Pauline Allison and Barbara Green, both of Sylva; one brother, Lindon Allen of Whittier; eight grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.



Charlie Macon

Chella Mullen “Charlie” Macon, 89, of Lakeside Circle Drive, Glenville, died Thursday, Nov. 17, 2005, at Highlands-Cashiers Hospital.

Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 20, at Hamburg Baptist Church, of which he was a member, with the Revs. Matt Ledbetter and Brad Hughes officiating. Burial was in Oak Hill Cemetery, Evansville, Ind.

Pallbearers were members of the church.

A native of Roabards, Ky., she formerly lived in Evansville, West Palm Beach, Fla., and Crawfordville, Fla. She spent her summers in Glenville for more than 20 years before moving there in 1995. She was a member of the Glenville Eastern Star Chapter 222. She was a daughter of the late Bert and Mary Williams Mullen.

She was also preceded in death by her husband, Neile Macon.

Surviving are one son, Dewey E. Taylor of Chatsworth, Ga.; two sisters, Katherine Monroe of Glenville and Dorothy Kirkham of Salt Lake City, Utah; one brother, Burt Mullen of Evansville; one granddaughter; and one great-granddaughter.

Memorials may be made to Hamburg Baptist Church, 4673 Hwy. 107, Glenville, NC 28736.

Robert Storr

Robert Franklin Storr, 88, of Sylva, died Sunday, Nov. 20, 2005, at Mountain Trace Nursing Center after a period of declining health.

Memorial services will be held at Sylva First Presbyterian Church at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 26.

Before moving to Sylva he lived in Plainfield, N.J., and Mount Prospect, Ill. He worked for Continental Can Company for more than 40 years and was a U.S. Army veteran, having served in the European Theater in World War II. He served as a deacon and elder in the Presbyterian church.

Surviving are his wife of 59 years, Dorothy Storr; one daughter, Judy Henderson of Cullowhee; and three grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Sylva First Presbyterian Church, 46 Presbyterian Drive, Sylva, NC 28779.

Asheville Area Alternative Funeral Services was in charge of arrangements.



Charlotte Moody

Charlotte Osborne Moody, 87, of Brevard, died Sunday, Nov. 13, 2005, at Asheville Manor.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Friday, Nov. 18, in the chapel of Moody-Connolly Funeral Home. Interment was in Pisgah Gardens Mausoleum.

She was a native of Buncombe County and a former resident of Jackson County. She was a daughter of the late James and Myrtle Finney Osborne.

She was also preceded in death by her husband, Frank A. Moody Sr.

Surviving are three sons, James Moody of Brevard, Charles Moody of Franklin and Frank A. Moody II of Asheville; one daughter, Linda Seagle of Brevard; one sister, Elizabeth Holland of Atlanta; 11 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association of Western N.C. Chapter, 3 Louisiana Ave., Asheville, NC 28806-3419.
