Town prepares for Christmas parade
By Justin Goble
As the end of November nears, Sylva is preparing for its traditional Christmas celebration.
The town’s annual Christmas parade will be Tuesday, Nov. 29, and this year’s theme is “A Mountain Christmas.”
Grand marshals for this year’s festivities will be the Smoky Mountain High School cheerleaders, who won a national championship earlier this year.
The parade will begin at 7 p.m. and will start at the Community Service Center, according to parade coordinator Betty Foxx. The route will follow Scotts Creek Road then turn left onto Skyland Drive. Once the parade reaches the Business 23 intersection at McDonald’s, marchers and floats will turn right and continue to the N.C. 107 intersection, making another right turn onto Main Street. As has been the case for the past few years, the parade will travel the “wrong way” down Main Street – toward the old Courthouse.
Along with the SMHS cheerleaders, Foxx said the parade will include numerous floats and one fire truck from each of the county’s fire departments.
For those wanting to participate in the parade, there is still time to sign up. Foxx said that she still has forms available for anyone wanting to be part of the event. However, she said that all participants must fill out the paperwork before they can take part.
For more information or to get an application, contact Foxx at 586-2512.
