Timeline: From crime scene to death of suspect McCollum
These pictures capture the dramatic events that unfolded in Cullowhee between 9 a.m. and noon on Tuesday, Nov. 15, when Jackson County Sheriff’s Office deputies and agents with the State Bureau of Investigation located a suspect on the run after a pre-dawn robbery/shooting that left three injured. After the suspect, identified Tuesday evening as 32-year-old Dewann Christopher McCollum of Fayetteville, was determined to be hiding at Moss Apartments in the Wayehutta area, Sheriff Jimmy Ashe called in the Sheriff’s Emergency Tactical Team, who forcibly entered the apartment and found McCollum brandishing a knife. Officers commanded McCollum to drop his knife, but he did not do so, according to the sheriff. SETT team members then fired on McCollum, who was pronounced dead at the scene.– Herald photos by Nick Breedlove
