Then and now

Carolina Tire Co. opened in Sylva in 1966 when the top photo was taken, and continued its Main Street operation for more than 30 years, closing in the late 1990s. A similar company occupied the building briefly, and Haywood Builders Supply recently remodeled and refurbished the structure before opening The Design Center about two years ago. – Herald file photo (top) and Herald photo by Nick Breedlove
