Thanksgiving pies
Students in Dona West’s life skills class at Cullowhee Valley School were busy Monday making pumpkin pies for Friday’s annual Thanksgiving dinner, which has been a holiday tradition in West’s classroom for the past 25 year. Featuring turkey and all the trimmings, the holiday meal is prepared by the students for parents, friends, school support staff and classroom volunteers. This year, students from two other classes – Lori Wright’s sixth-grade class, which pairs with West’s class for peer tutoring, and members of Doug Ward’s life skills class – are helping with the feast. “When we cook we work on reading and math as we follow the recipes and measure ingredients,” West said. “The kids also work on practical skills, like cooking, and the dinner itself provides opportunities to practice social skills including writing invitations, introductions and conversation.” Helping West turn out the pie filling are, from left, Bailey Simpson, Ethan West, and Nikki Frizzell. – Herald photo by Nick Breedlove |
