SM swimmers will open season at W. Henderson

The men’s and women’s swim teams at Smoky Mountain will begin their seasons Tuesday at West Henderson.

“We have a good quantity of swimmers which should develop into a pretty solid team going into conference competition,” Coach Bill Bowers said. “The kids are focusing on becoming a quality team.”

Heading the returnees is Megan Owens, who was all-state last year as she placed second in the 200 freestyle and third in the 100 free at last year’s State 3-A Meet. She set a school record of 55.17 in the 100.

The roster is not complete, Bowers said, but he did list a partial roster for both teams.

Among those on the women’s team are:

Alex Kevlin, Justin Mathis, Kaitlyn Kluge, Nikki Lookabill, Kat Toledo, Kelly Moore, Annelise Davis, Rachel Graning, Katie Hayes, Miranda Myers, Victoria Palmer and Natalie Woodard.

The partial roster for the men includes:

Whitfield Anderson, Grayson Cooper, Anthony McDowell, Josh Young, Mark Miller, and Bryan McManus.

Two home meets are planned for Western Carolina University’s Breese Gym, but one of those could be moved to a new aquatic center at Cherokee, according to Bowers.

The schedule is as follows:

Nov. 22 – at West Henderson.

Dec. 10 – at Brevard; 17 – Brevard.

Jan. 4 – at East Henderson; 13 – Franklin; 17 – at Rabun Gap (Ga.); 21 – Western Athletic Conference Meet (site to be announced).
