Honoring veterans
Jackson County honored its veterans Friday during a noon Veterans Day ceremony at the Courthouse fountain. American Legion members (top photo), including Lyman Parker, left, and L.C. Bumgarner, presented the colors, and Sylva Mayor Brenda Oliver (left in lower photo) presided over a program that included brief remarks from Commissioners’ Chairman Brian McMahan, second from left, and the Rev. Walter Middleton, second from right, who was a prisoner of war during World War II. Also participating was Sean Rhodes, who has just returned from duty in Iraq. “As a nation that strives to look to heroes, we must look no further than our local servicemen and their families, for they are heroes,” McMahan said. “They laid down the tools of their trade to heed the call of service.” – Herald photos by Nick Breedlove
