Then and now
Jack Allison’s tire store, located across from The Coffee Shop, was a thriving business in the mid-1950s when the top photo is believed to have been taken. Allison, right, sold the establishment in 1971 to current owner Paul Hall, 76, who has worked at the tire company since he was 15 with the exception of his military service. Hall, who still operates Hall’s Tire Service, said he can’t remember when the shed at right was torn down. These days, Hall said he mostly repairs smaller tires, such as lawn mowers and wheelbarrows. Hall still uses a tire-welder that’s a holdover from Allison’s, and said he thinks it’s one of only a few still in use. – Herald file photo (top) and Herald photo by Nick Breedlove |
